Axle spline lengths

Digging around in the attic, looking for differentials (see my power train thread), I found 3 axles, all the same length, and with two of them having splines about 1 7/8" long from the end of the axles, and one that whose splines lengths were more like 2 1/2". Axles all the same length and appearance. Any wisdom as to why that one axle's splines are longer? Thanks, Doug
