The proggy on "Military Channel" reviewing the evolution of UH-1's, HU-1's, AH-1's. "Cobra" for most.

Slap a canoe paddle on water's surface at 50+ times a second and ya get th' noise from a Cobra in "high maneuvers"...

Sikorsky Hawk Works is only a mile or two from my work. There's no mistaking when they're test-driving one of the Blackhawk/Seahawk Helicopters. Big heavy "whop whop whop whop" nothing like a Cobra, but still really cool.

I live very near our local airport. We have a Guard unit that used to fly Hueys. Always flew directly over the house a couple hundred feet up at REEEEALLY strange hours of the night. Nuttin like that "WHOP WHOP WHOP" at 2:00 in the morning.

A friend of mine flew Cobras as a pilot and instructor for years in the Army. The armament on those things was impressive. Included:

> 40mm chain gun (essentially a 40mm machine gun);
> .50 cal "gatling" gun (sprays bullets like a fire hose);
> lotsa rockets;
> "heads-up" displays (guns would turn when you turn your head), etc.

Said is was more fun than sex to fire the weaponry, I believe him.

A co-worker of mine at Fairchild had been in the infantry in Viet Nam. Fairchild leased a hangar to a Huey Guard unit. When the hangar doors were open and the Hueys were flying, my friend would get a far-away look in his eyes. "Love to hear them rotors beat the air", he would say.

I guessed that the sound brought back memories of good things about to happen; they were going to be taken to the rear, mail and supplies were coming, things like that.

But it seems like the sound could signal bad things about to happen, too.
 
Even though the Huey was the work truck in Nam and saved a lot of our people, I could never understand why the rotor system couldn't have had a quieter design, like more blades. You can hear a Huey coming a mile off! Great set up for enemy snipers! I guess cost came into view here as the quieter multiple blade systems are extremely expensive compared to the Bell two blade design. PJ
