Exactly! It's late December 1941. FDR had finally got Congress declare war and join the Allies. I'd always thought the photo showed Churchill's way of saying "Don't mess with Britain, you fascist nahzees!"
Alas, instead, it's "You have plucked my cigar from my mouth, you scoundrel. You shall pay dearly for such impertinence ..."
Actually FDR got the US to declare war on the Empire of Japan, not the whole Axis alliance. Hitler declared war on the US a couple days later against the advice of his advisors, which was then followed by the US declaring war. Imagine how it might have been different had the German leader kept quiet and allowed our attention, and resources, to be diverted to the Pacific.
Yea, he proved that by constantly changing objectives and orders on how fighting was to occur. Had they for example taken Moscow rather than diverting to Crimea could have won in Russia since Stalin swore never to leave and his senior staff might have been trapped with him effectively leaving no central government. History can be fascinating to study and learn how sometimes incompetence, sometimes random chance has led to the current world. And someday the grandchildren and great grandchildren of today will look back at us and our decisions/mistakes.
Retreat from Moscow, 1813. Brown (moving left to right) shows the declining number of French troops on the march to Moscow. Black (moving right to left) shows the declining number of troops on the retreat, gradually starving or freezing to death.
