What is the average MPG of your cars? I do not have a working sending unit yet but did a little test with 3 gallons of gas and was able to drive about 51 miles. Thats 17 MPG. I think it is/should be better and here is why.

For one, I think it is running richer that it should.
Two, I have done mainly around town driving.
Three, I did a lot of fiddling with the timing & carbs while running.

What does everyone else really get?
 
We averaged over 30mph with Binabox on the Gatlinburg trip. Closer to 32mph on the KC trip (I went alone, did all the driving, maybe THAT'S why!!)

The '75 gets far less. Low 20's.
 
My, my, jaybird, you do drive slow--32 mph (miles per hour) average on a road trip? That's Bugeye speeds for your MGB! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All depends on what I'm doing. Best so far has been 31mpg and the worst has been 22mpg but that was in full on play mode in the mountains IE 2nd and 3rd gear 4k rpm plus the whole time. When I can keep the lead foot at bay I'm generally seeing 26 to 28mpg on the freeway if I can restrain myself to keep it below 70 but it will still do around 24 to 25 when averaging 80mph with bursts up to 95.

Got to love the freeways in socal. If there not clogged they really move. Especially below the Cajon pass.
 
Will a CB get better or worse MPG than an RB? Just a thought.
 
On the trip to Gatlinburg this summer, we got 35 mpg going over, and 32 coming back. '73 B with fresh rebuild and overdrive. 60-70 mph both ways. Still can't believe it did that well!

Our last trip with the B 79, full emissions, zenith etc (2900 miles) we averaged 37.6 mpg, mind you that would be imp gallons (4.5 litre).

This has been discussed a few times....the only MG I've got thats driven enough to get an accurate reading is the 61 A....It gets about 26mpg and thats almost all in the city driving, I only use it on the freeway a few times a year.

I went from Alanta to Iowa and got 49 MPG in a Bugeye with a stage II engine and I was running 60 to 65. I really did. Just goes to show what can be done.
 
I drove from San Diego to Vallejo (SF Bay Area) in my MGB with a freshly rebuilt engine (6k miles) and O/D tranny at about 65-70mph the whole way. I averaged about 26mpg. I also traveled the coast highway one for about 200 miles by Big Sur which probably hurt the mpg a little bit. Best drive of my life /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif pictures coming soon!!!

No, not sell it -- fix it! If it's getting poorer mileage than it should, it needs to be checked out.

I got about 30 on the trip to Gatlinburg, and get about 25 in mixed driving around town. 1969 MGB, all emissions gear intact & working.
 
Last week, I got 22 mpg in my 1974 MGB in mixed city and highway driving without overdrive. Some more carb adjustments might be needed, but it's an improvement over the 17 or 18 it was getting a month ago.
 
72 B dual carbs no OD. I set them a little rich for better starting (don't have to use choke in summer) and power and do 22 to 24 around town and 26 to 28 on the road.

Point is not moot and I am not selling. The car is running OK but the clacking - deisel sound - does not sit well with me. I had a club member tell me that the timing was off. I said that I set it at 10Âş static but need to set it with my light. He said toss the light, loosen the dizzy & start her up. Grab the dizzy & turn counterclockwise. When it starts running better it's OK. Does this sound like good advice & shoul I try this. Curiosity in the MPG is more of a partiall diagnostic tool to see if it is running in the neigborhood of OK. The sond of the engine does give it away though.
 
Well, you can certainly time the car by ear and get it darn close. But if your timing has to be way off in order to run right, you may have other issues and changing the timing may just be a band-aid. Perhaps a full tune-up is in order? Have you inspected the condition of the distributor and advance mechanism?
 
Some place I said it before. Factory timeing is only for factory fresh engines and even then is not perfect. The proof of the puding is how it runs with what you got.

That said if it is way off other things need looked at as well.

Your bud at the car club was right on for you.

luckily for me, the "Test Only" place I go to doesn't even bother with looking at the timing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
