Would someone please tell me how to squeeze a photo down enough to be able to use it as an avatar?

John,

In your photo software, you want to resize
your image to make it about 1" X 1" and then
lower the resolution to about 90.

that should do it for you. Save it as a jpeg

...and if you do not have access to photo editing software (such as PhotoShop), you can start an account on Photobucket.
Once you have uploaded a picture to Photobucket, there is an Edit option for each picture that allows you to resize (in fact, there is an automatic, avatar resize option).

Re-size to no more than 80x80 pixels. The limit is pixle based.

^^what Rick said.

I use G.I.M.P. (GNU Image Manipulation Program: https://www.gimp.org ); free, powerful, and it's the GIMP... what more can I say?
