AutoZone Parts list for Spridgets....

Trevor Jessie said:
But as those "old car guys" die off I guess the local auto store might go with them.

I don't know Trev, you seen the pics next door and us "old" guys really aint that old. I was shocked to see so many guys my age and even some younger. BTW, for some reason I thought you were older.

Max, from what I'm seein' it hasn't peaked yet. Look at what's going on w/ the reprint. They aint doin' it fer kicks. Look at how many folks are pulling disassembled junk out and putting it back on the road. IMO it's still growing. I agree with what you say, but Moss has always treated me like they were doing me a favor by taking my money.

I support the specialty guys as well, but I can not justify ordering "incidentals" from them unless I am also ordering other specialty items. The shipping and handling costs are rather steep, especially when I have to ship back a set of plug wires that arc like the fourth of July.

The other issue I have with ordering every day stuff from one of the usual suspects is time. I want what I want when I want it and I don't want to pay for shipping unless I can't avoid it.

NAPA has the BEST stock air filter you can get for a 1500. The quality is unbelievable. They actually use metal in the construction. You guys remember metal?

AND it is half the price of not very good air filters the usual suppliers sell with no shipping and handling.

The usual suppliers (minus VB) get plenty of my money. Spending a few dollars at NAPA now and again won't hurt them any.

Incidentally, I have had no luck with any of the other big boxes. The few parts I have been able to find through them have been expensive and crappy.

I source plugs and oil for my LBCs at Autozone and that's about it.

My local "real" autoparts place happily ordered Timken wheel bearings for both the Spit and the MGB. They still use a giant rack of catalogs behind the counter. Had to special order them using the computer, but it only took a day or so.

You're way better off getting better quailty parts form a LBC vendor, not only will you normally get better quailty parts, they can actually aid you in advice to repair your car, try that at Autocrap.

I have a buddy with Spridget race car, he refuses to get gear reduction starter, really dumb decision with a high compression race car engine, so he gets Autozone rebuilt Lucas starter with a lifteime gurantee, he must have replaced that starter using the lifetime warranty a dozen times in the last 5 years, it even cost him a race weekend (fiquire that was $1000 loss of money), so in the long run that cheap lifteime starter has cost him way more in labor and loss track time than the gear reduction's cost ever would, and in the mean time, I still using the same good gear reduction starter for a decade, so go fiquire, being cheap always cost more in the long run.

I bought alternator for my F350 from Autocrap, the first two I installed were defective from the get go, oh yeah they replaced them, but after the second one I got my money back and went and bought new alternator. Life is way too short for me to do business with Autocrap, and oh they hire the absolute dumbest people in the parts business. While NAPA is a better part stores, they don't have clue when it comes to our cars.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there are lots af small cottage businesses in our hobby who specialize in our cars, and most of them give you more than your money's worth in value, supporting them is the life blood of this hobby, and for that reason and that reason alone you should support them, Autocrap and NAPA could care less about your car or this hobby. In fact alot of these small businesses that support this hobby also support this very forum that you all enjoy and help Basil to keep it going, where's NAPA and Autocrap in that equation?

Maybe my situation is different than most.
Most of the guys working at my local NAPA have been working there for the past 22 years that I know of, probably more.
They know me and my cars, they make suggestions when I'm facing a pickle of a problem and they usually have some good input.
They resurface rotors and drums for me, they have nice machinery and charge me very little to do work I need to have done.

They live in my community.

They have many parts that actually work very well for me and they don't charge me shipping when they need to get something for me next day from one of their warehouses.

I've certainly put out some cash to the Moss, VB and AHSpares among others, but when I really need something today or tomorrow to get or keep my car on the road I try my local store first.

I feel no shame or guilt in supporting those guys who work at my local NAPA, in fact I'm happy to be keeping some of my money in my community.

It's called balance people - look it up. :grouphug:

Well said Rick.

One of my counter people has been working in this building, (under three different parts house names) for Fifty continuous years. Tomorrow we are giving him his fifty year card and pin, and lunch for the whole crew. He knows all the cars!
