Automotive Mentoring Group - Chicago

A few months back in Moss Motoring magazine, there was an article about the Automotive Mentoring Group based in Chicago, IL. Here is a link to their website - https://automotivementoringgroup.wordpress.com/

From the website - “Young men are only interested in two things, and that’s young girls and old cars. And we’re in the car business,” said Alex Levesque, founder and driving force behind AMG, the Automotive Mentoring Group, located in Bedford Park.

“AMG is proactive against gang violence,” he said. “Chicago has the largest gang population in the country.”

In an effort to combat juvenile violence AMG volunteers have been recruiting gang members off the streets.

“People want to ignore them, and they think that it’s just going to go away, and it’s not going to go away,” Levesque said. “We take them into this large warehouse, and we train them how to restore classic cars from the 1930′s through the 1970′s.”

I've had the opportunity to visit the shops of AMG and it's really something. They've got three areas, one for paint and body work, one for longer term projects and one for nearly finished or finished projects.

The article also talked about a TR6 they are restoring. The TR would be a throw away in most people's eyes, but to the guys at AMG, it's the perfect candidate for restoration. In addition to the TR6, they are also restoring a Riley drophead, owned by a prominent Chicagoan. And they will soon be restoring a 1959 Morris Minor Traveller, owned by my wife and myself. We are both excited by the idea of giving back to the community by bringing our Morris back to proper nick. Once the project starts, I plan on taking copious pictures and sharing them as well as hopefully posting videos on AMGs YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/user/Curbauto.

Please visit their website and check out the YouTube videos. The YouTube channel needs to have new content added, with luck that will happen in the next couple of months.

Check back periodically for updates!

Right now, several members are out in NY building a frame for the TR6. It is being donated by one of the companies that makes reproduction frames.
