My son has a 98 Cavalier automatic with 140K miles on it. If it is pushed hard there is sometimes a quick squeal from the engine area on upshifts. I am thinking that this is probably a transmission on the way out, which is not good as his college is many hours from home.
Fluid and filter were changed a couple of years ago and he doesn't put too many miles on it. You can't check the fluid level as it doesn't have a dipstick because "they" don't want anyone doing anything with a modern car other than put gas and washer fluid into it.
Are there any additives (not snake oil) that could be used to keep a college kid from having to pay more for a transmission repair than the car is probably worth? The car has been OK for him so he wants it to get him through another couple of years if possible.
