Auto trans?

OK, I did a search for this, but came up blank...

Has anyone every researched auto trans options for the Spridget?

No flames please!!!

Never fitted from the factory.

Due to the small size of the Spridget tunnel, I doubt any off-the-shelf autoboxes (like the B-W 35) would fit.

There was an auto trans option in the MGB for several years (for sure in '69)...but that's about the closest thing I can think of.

At the Sprite Jubilee there was a very nice BE with a Chevette engine with automatic transmission. About 80 hp I was told and very reliable. The installation was very clean. My wife made noises about doing this to our BE. Not going to happen, but it was tempting.

I do believe that is the first time I have ever seen Chevette and reliable in the same sentence.

Since the 210 manual trans can be mated to the A-series, why not the automatic? My wife's Traveller has the 210 engine swap and it has the Datsun automatic transmission. It fits under the Morris trans cover, but not perfectly. It needed a bit of gentle hammer massage before it stopped fouling the linkage. She likes it since she didn't have to learn to shift lefty on her RHD Moggie. Fitted to a Spridget, I would guess that the heater box would have to be savaged a bit.

So, it looks like the consensus is "maybe...". If the trans could be made to fit into the trans tunnel, and be mated using the same method as the manual trans, what would one use for a flywheel/torque converter combo?

I have the same situation as Glen_B, my wife dislikes manual transmissions, and this would make the car something that she would also be able to drive.

Maybe the answer for this is a complete engine/trans swap, like the Chevette suggestion by Coastalman. If so, I'd have a 1275 engine (condition unknown, but it can be turned over using a wrench, so not locked up) for sale.

Anyone know of any good combo swaps, other than the Chevette, that have been done?

Thanks!
