Auto Tags - unbelievable?

In California they offer renewel by mail.
It saves a lot of time at the local DMV office.I
usually take a magazine,etc.with me,so I'm not
frustrated.

I went last month to the AR DMV..dreading it with all my heart. I had my son's Supra which has been sitting in the driveway waiting on him, tags expired in January. Our Alfa, which we had not switched ownership on yet, My young son's recently purchased MR2 which we had just bought on E-Bay from Texas and my suburban which did not really need to be renewed until August but I figured I'd do it early so I wouldn't have to go back.
I had insurance cards, registration and titles in a folder and was prepared for a full day of running around to obtain whatever records or obscure glitches they could come up with this year. I walked in, no one was there.
I walked to an opened window and the guy (who restores cars himself) transferred two title and gave me new tags, moved my son's car's registration to July and my suburban to July (I was told last year you can't move registration months)and all of this was accomplished in about 20 minutes.
I was in shock and awe at how easy and smooth it went.
You just never know, sometimes you get chocolate, sometimes you just get a nut. This time I was lucky!

Tony-I would have thought AL would offer renewal by mail or internet-I can't imagine that there is any advantage in requiring everyone to go to the DMV to renew plates.

See, I only go to the DMV for drivers license renewal to get a new photo taken* and it always takes me, at best, half an hour.

*I did the "safe driver renewal by mail" thing last summer, mainly because I couldn't take time off work to go to the DMV. I'll go back when I'm forty.

We can renew by mail ONLY. If you want to license a car, transfer title, or move the date of renewal it requires a trip to the DMV. This year I just waited, let one tag expire, risked driving a little while on a new purchase and went in to do it all in one big LUMP. Now I've got all five cars in June and baring anymore purchases (or sales) I should be able to do them all on-line next year.
