I'd been having misgivings about the alternator in my Europa. Well, it is 38 years old and maybe needed TLC. The problem was though, that it was over-charging. I figured voltage regulator, but, wanting a second opinion I found a shop in Rosenberg called Dick's Auto Electrical. The shop looks about ready to fall down, though the customer reception area is bright and clean.
So I walked in, holding the alternator. When the guy at the counter had finished with the customer ahead of me, he looked at what I was carrying and said "That's an old European Delco". I knew I had come to the right place! I told him what it was, he said he'd look at it. He was a real enthusiast, showing interest and wanting to look at my Elise. Then he asked if I liked really old cars. I said I was brought up on pre-WW2 cars and had owned 1920s cars in the past. So he showed me into the shop where they were rebuilding the electrics on a Model T Ford.
They fitted new brushes and VR to my alternator (current Delco stuff fits, apparently) and replaced the Stator because it was on the point of burning out, as it had, indeed been overcharging and overheating. They even had the right stator in stock, in a box labelled 'English Delco'. It works perfectly and I'm delighted.
All of which is a long-winded recommendation for these guys. The shop is run by 2 brothers, Juan and Javier Salazar, really nice people and knowledgeable too. They specialise in alternators, dynamo / generators, starter motors etc.
