Austin-Healey 100M auction on BaT!

Re: Austin-Healey 100M auction on BAT!

Hmmmmmm ... under three hours left and the bid hasn't budged in days. Could this car go for less than $100K?

Caught 'Chasing Classic Cars' last night (no idea how old the episode is, but not too old methinks). Wayne advised an owner who had near-perfect AC Bristol and a Series I E-type--in 'For Sale Red' even--and neither came even close to the reserve. He put them up at Mecum(!), which doesn't seem to me to be the right venue for classic Brit cars, with the cattle auction vibe and all. Those kind of cars seem to do better at a Sotheby's or other high-class auction, esp. with the little Italian guy who sounds like a Brit running the show.

Bob, my guess is that this car does not sell. It is beautiful, but the vibe of the sale is not right, in my opinion. The seller did not know how to present a 100M and had to be educated by the commentators regarding documenting the things that make an M an M. You'd better know what you are doing if you want to represent a car of this pedigree. The previous owner chimed in a lot, which was great and added much needed credibility to the sale. In the end, things like non-original carbs and a replacement cold air box will throw some cold water on this car...I hope I am wrong, because it is beautiful.

I thought I saw Wayne double clutch the 1-2 upshift in the Jag. Anyone else see that? Maybe because it wasn't warmed up yet?

Re: Austin-Healey 100M auction on BAT!

High BidUSD $152,500 (Reserve Not Met)

I thought the $152,500 bid was pretty solid considering the recent M market. The $160k one sold on BaT in December has been the highest sale in the past year. I think the days of $200k Ms are past. The recent stock market events probably aren't helping sale prices, either.

I didn't catch that, but thought I saw some weirdness in the AC test drive, but don't recall what it was.

Pretty funny that the Jag boiled over before going on the block.

Re: Austin-Healey 100M auction on BAT!

Reid,
The correct English term is "thingumabob", though this is often shortened to 'thingy". Parts of London might say "fingamebab". Certain dialects may use the alternative "watchamacallit" but as this can't be shortened, it seems to have fallen out of favour.
