Friends in MGdom (as my dad used to call this little world),
Earlier, as I tucked my son into bed, nestled with the teddy bear his T (“T” for his granddad Tony) gave him, and the bear Dad gave me when I was younger than Will (recently removed from my parents' house and washed for his new tour of duty), I find myself thinking a lot about my dad this evening and this week.
As we gear up for the auction on Friday, I want to thank you for your support these last nine months. These have been difficult times, indeed, for our family and we could not have made it through them without a lot of faith, our family, and friends like you all. While naming people individually is always a dangerous thing, because inevitably you leave someone out, I would be remiss if I didn't thank Mickey Richaud and Bob White for the tireless hours they lovingly spent working in Dad's garage.
The next few days are going to be a blur as we move Mom to Birmingham to be closer to us, and make final preparations for the auction. I hope to see many of you in Gurley on Friday. I hope you'll come early to join the crowd from the British Car Forum at The Nook in Huntsville Thursday evening, and I’m sorry I can’t be with you there. Please introduce yourselves to me at the auction Friday, I plan to wear one of Dad’s Autoist hats and I’ll certainly have a nametag on so you can find me.
I’ve struggled a lot with whether this auction would please or disappoint my dad, and what he would think of all we’ve done in the last nine months. I can say for sure that he would be stunned at the outpouring of support from his MG friends, and his many friends worldwide, and about the very fact that his daughter is posting on his beloved British Car Forum. He wouldn’t believe that I finally know the difference between his cars, beyond the silly nicknames I used to give them; that I’m working on an article for Classic Motorsports about collecting cars while still planning for the inevitable; that I can’t wait to get his ’79 B in road shape to run my Saturday errands in; that his grandson and I are joining the Birmingham British Car Club; or that Mom is moving to Birmingham; but, most of all, he wouldn’t believe that almost nine months after his death, you all are still posting about him and missing his car advice. Dad was, for sure, a special breed. He was a kind soul in gruff clothing. He was a good friend—to MG collectors, but, most of all, to his family—and he counted you all as that.
For those who have asked, we’ll get Dad’s website back up and running in the next few weeks. You all are dear to ask for the information posted there, and I know Dad would want it all available for the world. I’ve just had to protect Mom, since there is a lot of personal information there for the world to see. Soon, the Sleeping B will be available to you all.
Please come Friday if you can. If you can’t, please follow the auction online at www.fowlerauction.com. Dad would want you all to be there, in one way or another. Should you have questions, please PM me (or, actually my husband, who will forward messages to me, to forward to Mickey Richaud). We have a lot of good cars, and even more good parts, that need new homes to love them the way The Autoist did.
Thanks again for you support and your understanding as we move toward and into the auction.
