Auction of The Autoist [Tony's Collection]

Friends in MGdom (as my dad used to call this little world),

Earlier, as I tucked my son into bed, nestled with the teddy bear his T (“T” for his granddad Tony) gave him, and the bear Dad gave me when I was younger than Will (recently removed from my parents' house and washed for his new tour of duty), I find myself thinking a lot about my dad this evening and this week.

As we gear up for the auction on Friday, I want to thank you for your support these last nine months. These have been difficult times, indeed, for our family and we could not have made it through them without a lot of faith, our family, and friends like you all. While naming people individually is always a dangerous thing, because inevitably you leave someone out, I would be remiss if I didn't thank Mickey Richaud and Bob White for the tireless hours they lovingly spent working in Dad's garage.

The next few days are going to be a blur as we move Mom to Birmingham to be closer to us, and make final preparations for the auction. I hope to see many of you in Gurley on Friday. I hope you'll come early to join the crowd from the British Car Forum at The Nook in Huntsville Thursday evening, and I’m sorry I can’t be with you there. Please introduce yourselves to me at the auction Friday, I plan to wear one of Dad’s Autoist hats and I’ll certainly have a nametag on so you can find me.

I’ve struggled a lot with whether this auction would please or disappoint my dad, and what he would think of all we’ve done in the last nine months. I can say for sure that he would be stunned at the outpouring of support from his MG friends, and his many friends worldwide, and about the very fact that his daughter is posting on his beloved British Car Forum. He wouldn’t believe that I finally know the difference between his cars, beyond the silly nicknames I used to give them; that I’m working on an article for Classic Motorsports about collecting cars while still planning for the inevitable; that I can’t wait to get his ’79 B in road shape to run my Saturday errands in; that his grandson and I are joining the Birmingham British Car Club; or that Mom is moving to Birmingham; but, most of all, he wouldn’t believe that almost nine months after his death, you all are still posting about him and missing his car advice. Dad was, for sure, a special breed. He was a kind soul in gruff clothing. He was a good friend—to MG collectors, but, most of all, to his family—and he counted you all as that.

For those who have asked, we’ll get Dad’s website back up and running in the next few weeks. You all are dear to ask for the information posted there, and I know Dad would want it all available for the world. I’ve just had to protect Mom, since there is a lot of personal information there for the world to see. Soon, the Sleeping B will be available to you all.

Please come Friday if you can. If you can’t, please follow the auction online at www.fowlerauction.com. Dad would want you all to be there, in one way or another. Should you have questions, please PM me (or, actually my husband, who will forward messages to me, to forward to Mickey Richaud). We have a lot of good cars, and even more good parts, that need new homes to love them the way The Autoist did.

Thanks again for you support and your understanding as we move toward and into the auction.

Being so far away, I'll be there in spirit and in thoughts

Shannon,

I was fortunate to meet your Dad,& still get choked up when I read
posts like yours.
I really wish I could attend,as having something of Tony's would
have a special meaning to me.How cool is that?
I have a really hard time when I think of Will,& the special bond
he will always have with Tony.
I don't know what else to say.......

I will be leaving for the auction on Wednesday morning. I am pretty sure that Tony would not want the cars to be a burden and whats being done with them is the best thing. Jerri appeared to be doing better from the first time I went to the second time there. I was very happy to see that. Lets continue to keep the family in our thoughts and prayers. Now its time to dig under the seats in the car to get any extra bucks together for the auction. See y'all there! Bob

For anyone interested in online bidding, it is open now!

Umm.... I may have missed something but: as I am looking at Tony's Benz pix, and get to the engine bay photos, THAT'S a six-hole JAGUAR engine, IN a Jaguar. I'd bet my err, well anyhow, what's up with that?!?!

Haven't looked at the Jag listing yet... get 404'd. Has IT got the Benz V8?

EDIT: And it's a bit surreal to see all this stuff. Genuinely upsetting.

That's not all the cars though, right? Looks like I see parts cars in the background with stuff on the hood but I don't see the car listed.

Yep - mixup on the pictures. The engine looks to be the one in Tony's blue XJ. VERY nice car, by the way! Needs a rear window motor/switch replaced, and some cleaning, but a very nice ride.

Don't know about the MB; battery was kaput when we tried to start it, but it was a driver for sure.

It'd be an honor to have either one of 'em, we're just not in a position to do it. :madder:

Billy -

As of the posting time of the online auction, I believe there were a couple of cars in which someone had expressed interest to Shannon. They may have been held out until the last minute.

Again, if anyone has any serious interest and specific questions, let me know and I'll try to fill you in. I'll be there Thursday morning, and Friday, of course.

There are 4 parts cars. They probably are not worth putting on the online auction. There are 2 MGA coupes and a early B and a 71 BGT thats a bit rusty. Bob

I feel the same, Doc. I've wish I had the means to bring that Midget home and finish it up, but it's just not possible.

Shannon, the mileage and an ocean prevents me from attending.

I will always fondly remember Tony. It is heartwarming to see that his ethos and morals were successfully handed down to you and yours..

God Bless.

I'd like to collect the whole set myself.

Shannon;

I would like to say "Thank You"
Despite your personal grief, you have helped all of us here with the loss of your father.
I am glad to see you will carry on his legacy.

Dave :thankyousign:

I found it rather hard to look through all those pics. I'd come across the pic of the Mercedes, and instantly think of one of Tonys posts talking about some of the stuff he'd done to it, Like I'd read it yesterday.
I'd love to be able to get an MGA coupe, but not possible.
I think the right thing is being done. It's hard enough for me to think about, I can't imagine the strength you all are calling upon to accomplish it all.
God bless you all. May Tonys spirit live on as his collection helps the hobby to live on as well.

From what I know of him, I believe he would be pleased and especially proud of you all Shannon.

The auction is on Bring a Trailer - Tony would have appreciated the fame.

"suction house"... how appropriate.

Ouch!

I'd agree, but I've met with the owner of the auction company, Mickey (No, really!) Fowler. Very nice guy, and it's obvious that he truly cares for the family. Been in business for years, and when I had breakfast with him and one of his employees (who'd been with him since he was 14 years old!), lots of folks came up to the table and greeted him.

I'm very comfortable with the upcoming auction. The auctioneers will have truly earned their percentage, and there's no way we could have sold all this stuff off without them!
