Athlete of the decade!?

A golfer is "athlete" of the decade, what an insult to all the real athletes! I am sorry but anyone wearing slacks and a polo shirt, riding in a cart and having someone carry his equipment just doesn't cut it as an athlete IMHO....unless they are talking about his extra curricular activities!

Actually, ...and I've actually heard people seriously make this argument...., pro golfers are "athletes" because they don't use golf carts. Not only do they have to hit a ball 65 or so times a day, they also have to walk for 3 hours.

When hockey and competitive triathlon have a "seniors division" I'll start to call golfers athletes.

Yup. I hate it when they bring golfers and race car drivers down into the same class as football and hockey players.

Not too fast, guys. Although pro golfers may not beat anyone in a foot race, being able to hit that tiny little golf ball straight enough to make par on an 8,000 foot long golf course is one heckuva feat. Few on this planet can do it well. If you don't think so, give it a try! :yesnod:

Extraordinary hand-eye coordination, not to mention the highly complex muscular and body control that's required for the club swing mechanics.

I also have heard of professional bass fishers being called "athletes". Now THAT is hard to imagine!

THESE guys qualify as jocks, as far as I'm concerned:

well put my friend...well put

I used to think drivers weren't athletes until I drove 16 laps in a NASCAR car at Talladega...would not want to do that for a living....worked every muscle in my body plus the concentration needed to stay on the high side of the track to follow the line, drafting & passing other cars....it was WORK!!!

Geez ping-pong is more inline for this than golf!
Heck at least it’s in the Olympics!

Golf is in the Olympics starting in Rio.

Geez... I can't believe I'm getting sucked into something as mindlessly stupid as a debate about sports. Personally I think applying the term "athlete" to anyone is about as impressive as bragging about having black tires on a car. Big yip.

Lots of things are "work". Lots more require intense concentration and skill. Most things require serious training and practice. That doesn't make any of them athletic pursuits.
