"ate" lifter?

"ate" lifter?

I saw plenty of MGs at the ~Watkins Glen Event~ last weekend.
Lots of MG-powered cars too.....like Michael's Elva.

But here's a strange one:

The blue MGA (below) "ate" it's lifter. I mean it was *gone* when we looked for it. The thing clattered badly, so John brought it in and pulled the valve cover. Moved the rocker arm over and pulled out the loose (and mangled) pushrod. Looking straight down, you could see the cam lobe......no lifter. The lifter (a decent chilled iron unit) must have shattered into a million pieces and fell into the sump. Never saw that before.
