Hey team,

I'm looking for a material that has excellent heat absorption/reflectivity properties.

I have purchased a carburetor heat shield for my 100/BN2 from Denis Welch, and would like to increase its effectiveness by adding a sheet of this material to it - probably by riveting it in position - before installing the heat shield.

Any leads on such a material? Thanks.

For a more serious answer, I'm a little dubious that the shield is that effective due to it's shape more than the material it's made of. Seems that heat can rise around it and get to the carbs anyway. I built some heat shields that wrap around the carbs more and channel the heat past them. You can see them in my Sig. The one thing I believe to be most effective would be a ceramic coating on the exhaust manifold (or headers). Making the need for a better shield not as important.
 
I used a siding material widely marketed as Hardiplank or Hardiboard at local home centers. I believe it's a silica based product, and is similar in dimension and appearance to the asbestos used originally. It can be cut and drilled, but be careful, it will quickly overheat and dull any power blade or bit. This product is especially useful in this application because it is fastened with rivets and washers, rather than adhesive. For added reflectivity, you can add an aluminum/silica product that is flexible and reflective.
 
editor reid, i think its been mentioned here, 1/4 " wonder board, same as used in bath/shower sub straight, sold at homeless depots. :savewave: p.s. a kid that went to my aviation school designed the shuttle heat shield.

That's what I'm doing....
 
I am currently doing a bathroom remodel project and have used this material on the shower walls. I also plan to use it on my BJ7 restoration. I have found the best way to cut it is to use a masonry saw blade (diamond grit impregnated).

nevets, i recently bought the heat shield replacement kit from moss, without a very expensive material testing of the kit and wonder board id say its the same basic composition if not exact. :savewave:
