Re: Are you signed up for a "subscription" yet??
Why does this always seem to reach such a sensitive and personal nature when the topic is paying for something on the internet? The internet costs money to run, just like a brick and mortar club in the real world. It seem that some feel that because it was once free, that it should be free forever. If so, fine, buy your own server, set up your own domain, buy all of the software and start your own site.
Basil said many times that it would remain open for those who don't contribute, but that those who do, would receive additional benefits and he added a name recognition. So what's the big deal or problem with that? If I choose to join the local LBC club and pay my yearly dues, I get to attend meetings, vote, and to participate in events that those who don't join or pay dues have no access to. So what's wrong with that? I've never have someone come a show and get mad at me because I'm a member and they're not. Even the most charitable of fraternal or civic organizations (Shriners, Elks, KOC, Rotary, Lions, etc.) require the payment of dues on a yearly basis. That is simply how they survive to do what they do. There is no difference here.
Contributing to a "subscription" is your own choice and matter of free will and conscience, Do whatever you feel is right in your mind and heart, but "subscribers" and "non-subscribers" should not have harsh words or feelings towards one another over something like this.
I now understand why Basil was torn about his decision and I now support it more than ever.
