Are Triumph Owners on the Cheap?

Not cheap, prudent is the word I like to use. I don't know how searcherman defines cheap but when you spend $$$$$ on a full frame off restoration it ain't cheap. I wonder why he's trashing Triumph owners? Ain't cool bro!

I suppose it depends on exactly what is required to rebuild the diff. Maybe these guys are asking for the diff to be checked over and new seals and gaskets fitted. Then the price seems quite reasonable to me.
Maybe he should be asking this question on the 6 Pack forum and not talking behind these people's backs!!!

A Triumph is an endless moneypit no matter how ya look at it.
Dale, surely by now you must realize that this is NOT the car's fault, any more than it is yours! (Take a look back at most of your 4024 other posts to date, where a certain previous owner's antics have been so well documented. :wink: )

On rare occasions, bad new cars slip out of every factory, from Yugo to Mercedes. But primarily we're all dealing here with cars anywhere from 25-50 years old or older. Previous use, maintenance and repair history is nonexistent on most of them. You have been, perhaps, much less fortunate in your initial choice of TR6. But you're almost there now...and there's no guarantee that you'd have been any better off had you spend the same amount of money on this week's "best ever TR6 on eBay" or whatever!
 
As far as a money pit, Actually once I redid everything on my TR4A years ago I drove it for years and spent very little money on it other than time and little fiddle stuff every now and then, I am hoping to have the same experience with my TR250, but realize the car is a little more complicated.

Lastly, if you keep your Triumph up or make it better than when you get it it will hold or increase in value.

That new Chevy/Ford/Honda etc. that you pay $300-400 a month on without thinking about it losses half of each payment or more to depreciation.

Except that's what you use for daily transporation. Hardly a fair analogy.

True, but it is still what I tell the wife

Point is if you do the work yourself I wouldn't call the cars "money pits" I know some people will never sell in their lifetimes, but it is nvertheless an asset that holds it value.

Unlike green fees, clothing, starbucks coffee, and a lot of other things people spend a lot of money for with little or nothing to show for it in the end.

Unless you use your TR for your daily driver. That is what I do and the cost of doing so (should I care to do a bit of math) is certainly much less than most other options.

I realize this is not practical for many but if the climate, the car and your personal time to devote to the greater maintenance required allow -- it is a fun and economical alternative.
 
Might be worth pointing out that there is a huge cost difference between running one of our cars and restoring one of our cars.

The TR8, even with the sorting out I've had to do, has been pretty cheap to run. The thought of properly restoring it makes me break out in a cold sweat however...

Glad to see that this post has taken on a bit more positive tone.

Just what exactly was the intention of the originator of this post? To throw a few digs about Triumph owners being cheap (since the TR5 in question was ridiculed a bit here) or to pat himself on the back about his thinly veiled sales tactics?
