TR2/3/3A Are these seat slides for a TR3B? how do you paint them?

Hi all,

Previous owner removed seats and slides (rails), and is no longer available to ask. There were a number of British cars in his collection, and I these slides were near the TR3B. The Moss part number on them are no longer valid part numbers. They appear to be zinc plated. The originals were black painted I assume? I've never had much luck painting zinc plated parts and having the paint adhere well? Are these the right slides, and how do you all paint them? I don't have the ability to epoxy paint.... spray cans for me....
 
Bruce, check to see if your local paint store has any SEM primer. Great sealer for the rattle can crowd. I used it on aluminum parts, worked fine. Not sure if the parts were painted as original, I'm sure someone will tell us.

The slides which are secured to the floor pans through the holes in the carpet were originally zinc plated. So were the seat tracks that slide in these floor rails. The TRA judging standard will confirm this. MIne had become rusty and during my restoration from 1987 to 1990, I had then sprayed black. TRA pointed this out to me - so I took them all out and re-sprayed them with Aluminium/Silver aerosol spray. No problems since.
 
I've been doing a nickel plating, without polishing it. It looks like zinc, but is longer lasting - and anyone that does chrome plating does nickel.

So am I correct in assuming that the seat floor rails are installed on top of the carpet? Is zinc plating the same as galvanizing?

Bruce, I painted mine with POR-15. You can buy epoxy primer in spray cans from Eastwood.

Yes and no. Galvanizing and Zinc plating are both zinc coatings. However, in general (but not exclusively or always) the term galvanizing is used for a hot-dip process that deposits a layer of molten zinc on a surface. The finish typically involves a heavy coat of zinc which is coarse in appearance and "dull". When the term 'zinc plating' is used it generally means the coating is deposited in an electro-chemical bath of zinc salts (an electric deposition process instead of a mechanical one). Zinc plating is typically much brighter than galvanizing. It is used where the material build-up thickness needs to be controlled and the finish/appearance is important. Neither of these should be confused with zinc-chromate which is a process that deposits a very thin coating which may be colored or clear. I don't know enought about zinc-chromate to comment on how it is applied.
