Are these really that expensive?

It looks like $3265.95 is the STARTING bid price and there are no bidders as of yet. A bit steep vs. the Toyota conversion.

Wow Neat link!

There are no bidders.
Wonder why...

ISTR Quantum is knocking these out at about $2400 a pop.

Don't quote me on the # though - I went HVDA - the Sierra box tops out at handling about 200hp, whereas the W58s are good for quite a bit more.

Go to John (Quantum) for factory style OD or a conversion. He's fair, honest and keeps his word. My O/D works perfectly thanks to John.

I'm with Alana. When the budget allows I plan to go the HVDA route. I like the hydraulic throw out bearing. The transmissions are available here in the US. And Herman is a very nice guy.
I have nothing against John. I just want to go to a 5 speed.

The type 9 is a 5-speed fwiw. It's the box fitted to (amongst others) the UK Ford Sierra - I guess the closest comparison here is the Merkur XR4 (?).

Monday my 71' TR6 is going in for the install of the "Ford type 9 " 5 speed.

Has anyone had and experience with these conversions?

I wont know for a couple weeks when I get the car back...

Ill let ya know
4th gear is 1.00 5th is .825

This is a completely rebuilt Ford “Type 9” 5 speed “semi close” or “2.8 sport” designation transmission as used in the 6 cylinder English Ford Sierra sedans outside the USA. These were also the standard transmission on the Mercury Merkur in the USA. This comes with a non-modified or modified (you specify) front cover and the “short” input shaft (160mm). Rebuilt with all new bearings, synchros, layshaft, seals and gaskets, new input shaft and new cluster gear. Ratios are 6 cylinder standard: 1st = 3.36, 2nd = 1.81, 3rd = 1.26, 4th = 1.0, and 5th = .825 .

A good friend of mine had his TVR (TR6) transmission rebuilt by John at Quantum. Spent a good deal of time with him. I would trust him 100%. I would like to convert my TVR (TR6) to a five speed. Does John go the Ford gearbox route? Any idea on approx cost? I would do my own labor (installation, that is).

By the way, the HDVA(?) Toyota kit looks pretty impressive also.

the units are about 3k
I have been dealing with John since the early 80's, and yes he is putting mine in next week sometime.(Ford Type 9)
He is the best in this field I have ever dealt with.....

Do you know the ratio's for the Toyota?

Hello all,

I have said this before (several times) but I don't understand the amount of people that want to go the five speed route, especially at those prices.
In my view a overdrive four speed wins hands down in driveability, and surely, even in the USA, must be available second hand for much less money.
