TR4/4A Are the seats interchangeable on a 64 TR4?

Hi All,
The driver's seat on my TR4 is starting to get a bit more broken in than the passenger seat. Do you know if the driver and passenger seats can be switched? They look pretty much the same to me. Here is a link to a picture so you can see what type seat I'm talking about.
1964 TR4 seats
Thanks.

Don't have my parts manual handy to confirm, but the swap is pretty easy so it may be worth simply switching them and seeing if you can spot any difference. I'd keep the tracks in place and just unbolt at the front pivots to do the swap.

The only trivial difference I know about is that the passenger seat may have a "lift the dot" style post that is used to hold down the tonneau if you like to drive with the tonneau on.

I just happen to have a pair of '64 TR4 seats on my shelf. I am pretty certain they will not interchange. The rear release lever handle is on opposite sides. The sides of the back are tapered to fit the outside of the body and straight on the inside. The attachment tabs under the seat are different distances from the seat edge.

The seats are 'handed', each leaning in a bit.

That said, I have switched them and used them that way for a spell -- when I had some upholstery work done on the drivers seat I mounted the passenger seat on the left so I could continue to drive. Did the switch in the parking lot of the upholstery shop.

It is not ideal though, the outer upper corner of the seat back may rub the quarter panel depending on how far bcak the seat is adjusted. Also looks a bit squirrely.

I considered having both seats covers undone and then switching the seats bottoms between d/s and p/s as the seat bottoms appeared to be nearly identical. This would involve considerable unstitching & restitching.

In the end my drivers side seat bottom split along a seam in a fashion that defied repair (and was failing in other places) so I reluctantly had the seat bottom replaced. Not an expensive operation labor-wise but I had to buy half a hide which is pricey.

Just looked at the pic... those seats are really fine, I assume that's the original leather as the look of original is very hard to recreate. Good luck with the grey carpet... mine (from TRF) has faded into a wierd orange color, most likely from exposure to UV (hard to avoid in a roadster).

George, thanks for the compliment on the seats. They aren't the original leather though. They were redone (as well as the rest of the TR) several years ago. The work was all done by the shop that just sold the famous $1100 Lucas battery!

After a visit to the garage, I can see now what you all are saying, the seats are different right to left. I appreciate the help and I won't try to "rotate" the seats.

TR4 Seats
Best to all, Jeff

1965 seats are different in that the seatbacks slope differently on the outside edge from the inside edge.
So they are symetrical, not identical.
May not be the same as a 1964, TR4 vs. TR4a.
