Approximate build date for 3000 MK BJ7 25281?

Hi All,

I've not ordered a Heritage Certificate for my 3000 yet, but will soon. In the meantime, would any of you know the approximate build date for my MK II 3000? It is a BJ7 number 25281 and is titled as a 1963.

The reason I'd like to know is that I have ended up with two nice original owner's manuals for the BJ7. One is printed November of 1962, the other in August of 1963. I just wanted to know which one to keep with the car.

Thanks! Jeff

Fairview,

My BJ7, #24578, was built June 27-July 3, 1963 according to my BMIHT certificate, and mine is titled as a 1964. I would guess yours was built in late August or early September 1963.

Fairview,

My BJ7, #21127 was built October 19, 1962 according to my BMIHT certificate. If you are interested in departing with the November 1962 owners manual send me a PM.

Thanks, Terry

Mine (219XX) was built 1-4 February, 1963. According to BLHC.

Just curious, but do you not give the complete chassis number because you don't know it, or are you keeping it secret for some reason?

Jeff, the last BJ7 chassis number was 25314, so your car is the 34th car from the end of BJ7 production, which nominally ended in September 1963. Without knowing the exact date of build for your BJ7, I would guess that the August 1963 publication is appropriate to your car.
One would expect the next chassis number, 25315, to be the "first" BJ8, however it was not the earliest by date, which was actually 25317 (built 11 Oct - 29 Nov 63). HBJ8L/25315 was built 20 - 23 Jan 1964.

Steve, Thanks that is very interesting and thanks for the information.

25508 (BJ8) was built late Nov. 1963. Steve, I believe you have that info. Some Healeys are just out of chronological order. When was the first BJ8 built that you have recorded?

Rich, here are the build dates for the first 10 BJ8 chassis numbers. Dates in parentheses are despatch dates:
25315 20 - 23 Jan 64 (27 Jan 64)
25316 6 - 13 Dec 63 (23 Mar 64)
25317 11 Oct - 29 Nov 63 (16 Dec 63)
25318 22 Oct - 18 Nov 63 (19 Dec 63)
25319 5 Dec 63 (12 Apr 64)
25320 24 Oct - 27 Nov 63 (13 Dec 63)
25321 18 Oct - 19 Nov 63 (16 Dec 63)
25322 18 - 27 Nov 63 (19 Dec 63)
25323 Not recorded
25324 15 - 23 Oct 63 (16 Dec 63)

As you can see, the "first one built" depends on your definition. The earliest one started was 25317. The first one finished was 25324. The first one to leave the factory was 25320. It's possible that some later chassis will be found to have begun/finished the build process first when the data is acquired by the registry, but that's how it looks at the moment.

Thanks for helping me figure out about when my 3000 was built.

Since I've first posted, I have now confirmed that 25281 has a build date of 22-23 October, 1963 and was shipped to a dealer in Philadelphia...and had whitewall tyres!
