I was talked into buying my daughter a Mac Book. Is there free software similar to a Word program for it?

I use NeoOffice on my Mac, it's a well put together version of OpenOffice.

...did someone mention open source?!?!

...wow....

Openoffice is pretty OK.

Your freakin' Linux stuff gives me a headache. They had to drag me away from DOS kicking and screaming the whole time, but Linux is just...nevermind

mehheh.

Syntax is EVERYTHING!!

Eh... yup. It took me years to get away from dropping to DOS to type dir /w and tons of different "copy" and "xcopy" things. Windows STILL falls way short of what some simple DOS commands offered.

I like some things I see in Ubuntu, but the lack of support for a lot of the devices I need to use (or complications getting them to work) doesn't really make it very attractive. I can see me trying to train some guy that already has trouble finding the "start" button

Gah... understand.

Ubuntu is an "instant gratification" Linux version... Look into Fedora, please.
Well supported and ~somewhat~ conventional.

CentOS is even MORE robust.

...just takes more "admin" familiarity.

eh... it aims to please. It does a fair enough job at it too. Since it's based on Debian it's pretty darned bullet proof too.

Had a HDD failure on my ubuntu box this week. Was the drive I had mounted at /home/ftp ... I had another drive mounted at /home/ftp/pub/Media\ Files/ took me a good 20 minutes to figure out why I was getting Input/output errors when I would got to /home/ftp/pub, but going to /home/ftp/pub/Media\ Files/ worked perfectly fine.

a quick fstab edit and a couple of "sudo mkdir" commands later and all was well again

Oh yeah... Ubuntu aims for that ease of use target, but it still needs basic admin skills to do anything "fun"

Would you guys speak the Queens English please!

That makes me just want to run out and get me a copy.

I have to admit though, Ubuntu installed lightning quick - and almost everything was up and working (video/sound/network) without zero interaction from me. That was a real surprise. I googled installing my wireless card and found some 4-year-old instructions that worked perfectly (being a noob the hardest part was finding the stupid "terminal").

There's that darn'd syntax thingie again. Or more accurately, the "terminology" thingie.

Uh... Just a comment: I stuck with Ubuntu for now because it was already up and running (but I let it update to 9.04 yesterday) - the way it and firefox displays everything is absolutely wonderful!
