Not only are there thousands of people reading what you write, but many that respond. AND, you rarely get to meet any of them face to face!
If you want real companionship, you must distinguish between real people and virtual friends.
Me personally, I find the people on this forum to be GREAT. But I seem to be lacking companionship in the local social circles. (I don't drink enough)
I have to speak my thoughts on this - I've had "online friendships" that have lasted for years. And maybe knew more about them and they about me than many of the "real" people that I deal with on a daily basis.
So for me, the people behind the words on this screen are just as real and important as anyone else. Though I may never see them face to face, their thoughts and emotions are just as important and real as anyone else's that I communicate with. And I think the fact they're hidden behind a screen of words generally tends to make them speak more candidly, and show their "real" self to a greater extent than if we were communicating face to face.
So I consider online friendships/acquaintances just as real as any others and I think they should be treated and weighted just as highly as "real" acquaintances and friendships. And the communication, though maybe more candid, is just as important and should be just as respectful as if you're speaking to someone at the office, church, or the pub.
Just my thoughts -
