At the Space & Rocket Center here in Huntsville is a full-scale model of the Saturn V standing proudly outside the Davidson Center for Space Exploration, a purpose built building that houses the last restored true Saturn V rocket...it's on the National Register of Historic Places & one of the new seven Wonders of the World.

You've gotta spend a day touring the museum there - there's even one of the earliest space shuttles (Pathfinder) on its big orange fuel tank...as well as an SR2 Blackbird...and all sorts of other space exploration hardware.

In the summer of '69 I had just started college in Florida. Me and and a couple of guys cut classes and drove across the state and camped out on the beach and witnessed the launch. It was totally awesome... something I will never forget.
We did by the way get into trouble for cutting classes, but I know I saw history in the making and it was well worth it.

USF, Elliot?!?

I was 11. My father had helped assemble the TV camera used on Apollo 11. I saw every minute of the coverage, even the middle of the night stuff.

What's really amazing is that they pulled this off with a vehicle that had less computer memory than the cd player's anti-skip memory in any car on the road today. Makes Apollo 13's accomplishments all the more impressive! :cooler:

NASA has now admitted to taping over the original 16 tapes of the Apollo's broadcasts from the moon on that eventful journey, stating that there was a shortage of recording tape at the time.

<sigh>

I also learned today that a piece of the Wright Brother's airplane accompanied the Eagle to the lunar surface.

Interesting trivia.

Sidebar...Pete Mantell's two youngest sons attended Space Camp in Huntsville this week.

What a great opportunity, and what great timing!

Was after freshman year of college, western PA. Had to watch from a TV with friends and family glued to it.
Luckily it was a small family and a large TV. :jester:

So they took the pieces of the plane to Nevada????

Still not sure that I disagree with Bill. My father in law sold the tubing that was fabricated into the ladder for the landing module. We still have a picture that NASA sent to him of the module with the ladder deployed.

I've been listening to the "real time" rebroadcast of the Apollo 11 mission. Really interesting stuff, hard to believe it was 40 years ago. Yesterday they were traveling over 5000 feet-per-second, now they're down to around 3000, and they're about 180,000 miles from earth.

What a difference between how they're doing things now with data uploads, etc. They've been having to read up antenna settings and a bunch of other things one bit at a time verbally.
