Anyone see the new Pontiac Solstice?

Yes, and I've been anxiously awaiting it's release! I saw one at the LA Auto Show in January. Looks better in photos but still a cool car.

Here we go again!?! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif There was a little 1/10th page write up in Car and Driver saying...
" As promised, The 2006 Pontiac Solstice will start below $20,000 when it goes on sale this Summer. GM guru Bob Lutz himself posted the announcement on the web: fastlane.gmblogs.com For $19,995 the Solstice comes equipped with a 177-hp, 2.4 Liter four-cylender, a five-speed manual transmission, a CD player, and 18-inch wheels"
Typed from the article
Hope it helps, There was another fun little write up in Car and Driver last year that had a few TR's and what not in England, If I can I will try to find that article....If interested.
Have fun

I've seen both at the NYC show, the Solstice and it's twin brother the Saturn Sky, I believe both cars are built on the same platform. To tell the truth, I'm not a fan of the Pontiac at all (not a fan of just about anything Pontiac has done for the last several years), but I think the Sky is drop dead gorgeous looking. If they can bring them in at the target price they might have a winner on their hands, although I'm doubtful either car will come anywhere near the Miata in terms of quality, fit and finish. I say that not because I'm anti Pontiac or GM, but based on the fact that my parents have owned three Pontaics in the last 9 years and they've all left a little to be desired in those areas.

Just took a look. Gotta say the Sky is more attractive. The Solstice looks like a jag C-type with a screwed up grill.

Amazing what Detroit can offer up for 20G's when they want to, isn't it?

Autoweek published my letter on the Solstice -- something like "Solstice is the most significant vehicle from the NY Auto show, because finally Saturn has created something not equivelant to a bedtime story."

Neither cars do it for me in terms of styling, but in terms of concept -- it's right on. We need more affordable roadsters. In terms of power, I don't mind the lower-displacement powerplants...of course, I have a TR7! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sammy, Love your new sig picture!!! Great choice of cars.

Zack

Yeah, it looks like Sammy will be in need of a "garage-mahal" pretty soon, he seems to be running out of space.

I wish I had that problem...actually I will once the new Stang comes, I'll have two toys at that point and only one garage bay.

Thanks guys. I figured it was time to have a picture that included the '89 Corvette. Actually, I'm hoping to get that back on the road soon and get rid of it soon after that. I'm itching for something older and more fun than an Atari-dash Vette!

hmmm... why not a ZR-1? or a '92 Viper RT/10? Those are still a bit pricey... but if another vette the ZR-1 is the one to have from the late 80's early 90's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

lol I wish I had a 3 car garage....3 cars in a double right now and were measuring to try an get another one in across the back!!!Sammy hows the tent/shed thing working for ya??..we're considering one.....

I saw the Solstice in the Local auto show in Feb-- have to say I was pleased-- took several pics. It looked great and it seems like it should be a great driver with the power to weight ratio/wheelbase, track width, etc. Really glad to see at least an attempt from an American mfg. to build a sports car for the masses.

20K for a 177hp roadster....

holy crap....

And here I've been dreaming about a cheap TR7 convertable.

Of course if I traded in my mind-numbingly boring Dodge Neon commuter for a Solstice my wife would end up running off with it and I'd be stuck with the grocery-getter.... My fun car needs to have a certain level of un-reliability to keep her away!!!!

My neighbor up the street has a ZR1, and I've driven it. It's not a convertible, it's very clunky and uncomfortable (like my '89.) I'm also too tall -- my head hits the "halo" for the targa. I'm also way too tall for the Viper. Furthermore, I'd rather have a bunch of cheap cars. The only car I have that I'm into $10,000 or more is the 2002 Vette. (Excluding the 2002, I have less into the other 5 cars (acquisition and maintenance) than a new Accord.)

The tent is somewhat of a disappointment, but it does the job. Water seems to get through, because it drips down the side, then condensation forms on the top and drips on the cars. I bought it because all the convertibles will leak water on the seats if left totally outside.

[/ QUOTE ]Ahhh, the pleasures of living in western Washington. The scenery may green and gorgeous, but there's a penalty to pay for all that "green"!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sure, but I live in Houston...it was even more moist, plus hotter, so things rusted seemingly in a matter of minutes. Plus there were roaches the size of Healey Sprites.

And it was too hot to use Triumphs in the summer.

[/ QUOTE ]I lived in College Station (90 miles from Houston) for 2 years while in grad school and was sure glad to get out of there. Later, over a July 4 weekend, I was standing in line at a rental car counter in Orlando immediately after a rainstorm had passed over the airport. Everyone in the line was complaining about the humidity except one guy near the end who said "It feels good to me!" We all turned to see who the joker was and the man in front of him asked "Where are you from?" When he answered "Houston", we all nodded in agreement and empathized with him.

But there was once a place I was even more ready to get out of--Hopewell, VA. Hopewell proudly advertised itself as "The Chemical Capital of the South" and the Allied Chemical plant there was later sued by EPA as the major contributor of the chemical "kepone" to the sediment of the James River. We were only there for 4 months while I was stationed at Ft. Lee, but, in that length of time, the acid rain literally ate holes through the fenders of my rust-free Colorado motorcycle and took the paint right off the roof of our car! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif

Yup, I've been to College Station...plus I lived in Arlington, VA, so I understand the issues with living on a swap...And when my father was doing his time in the Service after college, he was also stationed at Fort Lee, VA...He actually speaks of it like he didn't mind it much, but that was back in the late 1950s.
