Anyone running with 14's or 15's on a Spridget?

Anyone know what wheels would fit?
I have the 13 inch Rostyles on there now, I see ads for 14 inch alloy mags all the time - they would look cool but would they fit on my 78 Midget?

Ive wondered the same. I have seen a set of 15" x 5" minilites on ebay for a morris minor several times and thought to myself hmm. wonder if they would fit.

14s with slightly lower-profile tires (same rolling diameter) would definitely fit... Dimensionally they'd be the same, as long as you watched the offset. I think 15s might be tough, you'd be running VERY low-pro tires... This thread needs pics!

I'd be happy with 14's.
What kind of specs should I be looking for?
14x5 4 lug 4 inch pattern?
What's the offset supposed to be?
Is the MGB the same lug pattern, or is a little bigger?

Not MGB, or Triumph or anything else, unfortunately. Sprite, Midget, and Chevy Vega... not sure if anything else uses 4 on 4".

Can't help with the offset, I'm sure someone will chime in...

Every 4 lug trailer out there is also 4 on 4 but that doesn't help much. Still you could put some of those little 8 or 10 inch tires on there and get killer torque.

Re: Anyone running with 14's or 15's on a Spridget

You can get 14" X 6" with any lug pattern (including 4 X 4) from ~Pete Paulsen~ for $40 "raw" (unpainted) plus shipping
(or chromed for $65 / ea).

You'll probably need to go to bigger studs/lugnuts.

I've bought wheels from Paulsen (for the race Escort)...they're decent quality.

But personally, I'd stick with 13" wheels on a Sprite.

Re: Anyone running with 14's or 15's on a Spridget

100 x 4 wheels are close to the 4 on 4 pattern. Off by 1.6mm or .8mm per lug. I helped a guy file a set to fit a vega and it worked ok. There are plenty of those out there to play around with but be careful. Don't want wheels coming off.

4 X4 pattern cars - search individually for tire size

Austin-Healey Sprite
Crosley - all '39-'52
MG Midget
Jensen Healey
Opel Manta, Kadette, GT
GM L-body
Buick Skyhawk '75-'81
Chevrolet Vega, Monza '71-'81
Pontiac Sunbird, Astre '76-'81
Oldsmobile Starfire '75-'81

The Monza had 4 on 4S??? I guess I never payed attention. My younger brother had one of them that came stock with the 350CI engine in it. It was a terrifyingly quick car and really dangerous with that much power and there were so many things out there to give the 350 more power.

Most 4x100 are FWD cars - all watercooled VWs 70s-90s, most Hondas etc., all with offsets in the 30-35mm range (for 13 or 14 by 5.5 or 6). Is that anywhere close to Spridgets?

oh man, and I briefly dated a girl with a Opel GT before I got married...

Wait - my wife isn't reading this is she???

Small universe, isn't it? She got a cheap mechanic out of it, too. Looking back at it, now I know why I liked her so much- she had cooler cars than I did.

240Z and a GT Opel.

DO NOT, under any circumstances use 4 X 100mm pattern wheels on Spridgets with a 4 X 4" pattern.

There is no such thing as "close enough" with lug-nuts.
Especially with the small, 3/8" lugs on Spridgets.
This is a recipe for disaster.

The incorrect offset typical of 4 X 100 mm wheels may be a problem, but that's not the issue.
The likelyhood of snapping a few of those 3/8" lugs at 60 mph is the *real* issue.

It may be possible to remove all the hubs and re-drill them on a milling machine to the 4 X 100 mm pattern so you can fit the more common wheels on (the "new" holes would overlap the old holes and require bigger studs).
I've thought of redrilling the hubs......but that's an entirely different matter.

Re: Anyone running with 14's or 15's on a Spridget

I rolled my Miata wheels off my se7en over to the Midget. I know the bolt pattern is different. Perhaps the offset will be appropriate. They will look cool and it would be much easier finding good tires in this size. Again, this was just me rolling my race tires into position.

Is it difficult to get the front hubs drilled for the more common 4 on 4 bolt pattern?

Re: Anyone running with 14's or 15's on a Spridget

Nevermind, I just read the post above. I'll research this a bit more to see if 1.) redrilling is possible, 2.) if it is worth the trouble and 3.) if the 14" wheel/tire combo will work. I love my Falken Azenis' that I run on my se7en, so maybe they will work on the Midget.

I also might be in a different situation than some because I'm running the RX-7 GSL-SE rear axle, which has the 4 on 4 bolt pattern. So either way, the front or the rear will need to be redrilled.

Re: Anyone running with 14's or 15's on a Spridget

Chris,

I believe the RX-7 rear end is 4x110mm. I will have to have my GSL rear end re drilled to the 4x4 pattern. BTW, Moser has axles for the RX7 rear for something like $315.00 ea. you can order them with the spridget lug pattern.

Re: Anyone running with 14's or 15's on a Spridget

What about uni-lug wheels, or do they make still. I had a set that would fit any 4 lug with the correct offset washers. Had 3 sets of washers for each wheel. Each washer inset at the lug in a precision oblong hole.
