Anyone Rebuild Steering Racks?

After my trials with the VB steering rack, I think I may be better off with a rebuilt original rack. Any recommendations?

John Twist of University Motors?

Why do you think your rack needs to be rebuilt? It may just need to be cleaned and adjusted. The inner TRE's may be fine.

You may very well be correct and I hope you are. I don't have enough knowledge to know whether that is all that is needed and I would like someone with more knowledge than me to check it out at least.

Inspect your now rack for wear.

Spridget racks wil last eons unless they are run out of lube or have had a hit and chipped a tooth. A cracked or torn boot also...this will allow dirt/grit in the rack end.

So if the steering is tight and there is no or very little vertical or fore-aft rack movement in the housing on each end of the housing, it should be fine.

Could also flush it out when off the car. New boots and fresh oil works wonders. Good for the rest of your life. It is one of those things that never seem to go bad on the little cars.

I don't know how long the boots have been rotted and torn up and the ball joints seem very loose. I'm reconditioning all the front suspension so I also want the steering as tight as possible. AHSpares has reconditioned racks for about $105 plus shipping so I'll probably go that route. I'm sending this one back to VB for which I paid $200 plus shipping so hopefully I'll end paying less and have a reconditioned original with proper fittings. Thanks for the help.

There ya go, good move in my opinion.
