This car has been on Ebay now 4 times.

Standard 8

Sounds interesting but I I don't think he's going to get the 3000 he's asking.

Anyone handy to go take a look?

Sorry Glenn I was in Jerome at the Haunted Hamburger a month and a half ago. Looks like a sweet Standard 8, looks like Winchester Blue in color.

The seller has had the for several years. I know, 'cause it's been listed on my Database page for several years! If I were to speculate, I'd suggest that he's not trying to make money; it's at least as likely that he'd like to recoup a portion of his investment. But I'd rather not speculate. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

As an early version of the Standard 8, it's a pretty rare car. Note, for example, that the doors have sliding glass (ala TR3A side curtains) and there is no boot lid (again, spare tire door ala TR2/3). Originally, even the passenger side wiper was an option. Very bare-bones cars, enough so that thoughts of marketing them in the US (as the Standard Vanguard Cadet ) were quickly squelched! And I'm reasonably sure that it is one of, if not THE, only running Standard 8s in the US (yeah, I'm the one who planted that idea in the current owner's head; I've only ever even heard of one other, which I believe was a slightly later one).

Oh, and yeah, I wouldn't mind having it at all, but it's not to be right now.

Thanks for the history lesson Andy. Being that rare it seems like it should reside in a museum.
Yeah...MY museum. All I lack is about $2,000,000 in grants and other funding to restore the collection, put up a building, etc., etc. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Admittedly, the Standard 8 isn't quite in the same league as a Bugatti Royale, or even a Triumph Le Mans TRS or Spitfire fastback "works" car. But it's an interesting piece of company history and, as I said before, pretty much unique in the US. It would go nicely with my Standard Pennant (also possibly the only one of its kind in the US), my US-spec. Herald 1200 Coupe (ditto), and other cars belonging to acquaintances such as a Canadian (prototype?) Standard Vanguard Ensign and a couple of Triumph-badged Atlas vans.... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif

I've talked to some people in the Standard Moter Club in the UK. Their concern with this particular car is that they are not sure the Standard 8 rear end will hold up to the Spitfire engine.

And, as with Andy, if the timing were a bit different, I'd be buying it too.

This has been a concern for many, many, MANY years now, and not just with Standard 8 / 10 / Triumph 10 cars themselves. Fact is that rear axle shafts in the US for Triumph 10s began to become very scarce well over 30 years ago. Greatly exacerbating the problem (and helping deplete the supply of intact Triumph 10s) is the fact that at least the Series II Lotus 7 cars used the same rear axle. Granted, these are very, very lightweight cars, but a lot of them had some reasonably powerful engines pumping torque through the potentially marginal Standard rear end.

(Heck, that's how I got my Pennant. Someone bought it for the rear axle and then felt guilty about discarding the rest of a quite restorable car. Fortunately, I knew where I could get an axle to put under the car to make it easier to load it onto my trailer for the long ride back from WV to NY!)
