Baz- maybe a solution for you.
We've had a recent problem of many homeless cats swarming
in our neighborhood. We have 3 indoor cats ourselves. The
wild cats pi$$ on our doors and stench up our garage "marking'
their territory.
We bought an airplane "cat carrier" from the local pet store.
Plastic box with a fine steel mesh swing door on the front.
I ran a 30 foot length of fishing line from the door, back
into my garage. I set a can of tunafish cat food inside.
When the stray went in to eat, I yanked the door shut while
Mrs ran over and latched it.
We took the entire box and cat over to animal control.
We got the box back.
I bet that would work for an opossum
edit: oh yeah, I put 20 pounds of weight on the box top
to keep it in place when I yanked the line.
