Anyone know about timeshare points?

we are off to Disney for a week at the end of the summer. scored a pretty good deal renting a timeshare close to the parks (Bonnet Creek) This has rekindled a discussion about whether we should consider buying a timeshare. For a lot of reasons, points seem to make sense but there are a lot of different companies. Needless to say we are talking resale cheap (think $1) to purchase so we have no plans to get caught up in presentations. Anyone have any experience of any of the companies that they want to share - good and bad.

JP I bought a timeshare in kissimmee about 20 years ago at $10,000 for 1 week a year and then got thinking about it. Why would I pay that kind of money to basically reserve a place for a week a year for my lifetime and I still have to get there, pay for my food and transportion while I am there and maintenance fees of over $300 a year.I don't think so.Florida law at that time allowed 30 days to change your mind about major purchases so I got out of it. My BIL has numerous time shares and had 52 weeks built up and he decided he couldn't spend that much time away from home (he's over 70)so he sold off half of them and now only has to spend 26 weeks away (tough eh!) most of them in the Bahamas.

Besides to me it's like a cottage who would want to go to the same place all the time. I like to see different places.

Run, and don't look back.

Couldn't agree more. Do the math and they are RARELY worth it. Just consider all the people trying to sell theirs and get out. Consider, too, do you really want to go back to the same place over and over again?

There are many websites that will provide opinions on time-shares (and with all due respects for those that may have one).

I remember being pressed to buy one in Cabo (so-as to get a lot of cash for Cabo activities :c)... and as I continued to decline it all, the price just kept falling. They said they'd throw in this and that; then I explained why it was a bad deal and they finally shut up.

Unless you really want to go back to the same place year and after, I'd avoid it all. Besides, you can usually find deals to stay in the same places for less than being an "owner."

Some companies allow you to swap to a different location. I knew a guy who sold 'em. He's a scammer and says it's a scam. I pay for vacation as I go...NEVER!

My sister and her husband has a timeshare contract. They've had it for years and can't get rid of it. Total waste of money in my book. But I guess if you want to spend that kind of money to reserve a room for a week once or twice a year where someone else can control when you have use of it, than have at it. They have some of the best sales people in the business, making money hand over hand. Once they get your signature and money, your nothing but a number and they could care less. JMHO. PJ

I'm pretty much in agreement with all the above. But a couple who are members of the church here have a timeshare arrangement which allows them to stay at any in their system. They have the flexibility to use them when they want to, and it works for them. But they do travel more than most of us, and they do "work" the system. The wife and I went to New Orleans with them last fall and stayed at a great hotel downtown that was in the network. Couldn't have afforded it otherwise!

Personally speaking, I don't have the energy (or the money, really) to make it work.

Our timeshare you don't pay every year. Just if you are going to use it.
There is no set week
Though there was a good size up front fee.
My wife is still ruing the day we got it

The one time-share thing I sat through (for gifts) in Cabo also bragged about swapping locations. So, I said "let's test it right now." We went on a computer and they logged into their exchange system, and nothing anywhwere was available! QED
