Hi
I am looking for a reliable paint body shop in Tijuana Mexico or close to the border in Baja , maybe even Encinada.

Mostly dent and rust repair , not heavy crash work

Anyone know of a place ?

thanks

Beaulieu

also if you know of places to avoid....

Do those words even go together? "good" & "Tijuana"?

Re: Anyone know a good Tijuana paint / body shop

its an old VW pick-up

looks like heck now, just needs more hours of prep work than I want to do myself or pay California prices per hour.

I quess it comes down to having Mexician workers on this side of the border do it ,
or on that side of the border,

Its not worth the money to fix it here as its more work than a quicky paint job at Maaco, Carco , one day can hide,

Its a work truck not a show truck,

Anyway I am going to give it a try

That's interesting.

Re: Anyone know a good Tijuana paint / body shop

I know you can get some good upholstery work dome cheaply in Mexico. Just exactly where I couldn`t say. However, in 2002 I was living in Corpus, Christi Texas I had been going to a small town across the border for Saturday evening entertainment near McAllen Texas {Progresso Mexico}. One weekend I decided to try Neuvo Laredo for a change. BOY was that a huge mistake. I nearly got Killed, As I was walking down one of the side streets {I always parked my pickup on the states side and walked over or took a cab} late in the evening I hear pop pop pop {gunfire} I see people scrambeling everywhere {as I did myself also.} Once I got home I discovered via the news that, that night there was a huge drug cartel gun battle over turf. I never went back to Mexico not even to the sleepy little town of Progresso. {I was scared stiff} I don`t know how T.J. is, but I myself wouldn`t care to find out. Let alone take my Prize TR-3 there for work on the interior.

Yes Mexico border towns are dangerous , but then so are many USA cities ,

I would not be going there in the evening anyway ,

And the TJ police now do not have guns !
they have slingshots !

yeah and you think I am kidding you.....nope its true

Re: Anyone know a good Tijuana paint / body shop

I think I read that they gave them back their pistoles.
Still, I would be hesitant to ever visit a border town again. I had a very bad experience in Nogales, in 1966.

Re: Anyone know a good Tijuana paint / body shop

Yep Jeff, but they don't have any rules as to who to use the Pistolas on. Going to border towns now in an effort to be cheap can be the most expensive trip you will ever take.---Keoke--AZ-- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cowboy.gif

Re: Anyone know a good Tijuana paint / body shop

just to let everyone know ,

I went to TJ today and am still alive /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Went with my friend in a lowered Dodge magnum (?) wagon on 18 inch rims ,

So we only got stopped by the cops once !
not a big deal, he says he always gets stopped in that car because its not sold in Mexico and the cops want a look at it,.....

Anyway checked out a few body shops , got told some crazy high prices.

One that was recommended said they were getting $5000 to do the body and paint on a Karmann Ghia, if true thats more than LA prices and pretty [censored] work, these guys came highly recommended , which is scary , as the price was crazy and the work done poorly,

The other recommended shop was much better, we liked how they did there work , they were fixing some really bad crash/rollover SUVs, they had some older cars in there too and were doing a good job on them , no pricing yet as the owner was in San Diego that day.

Anyway I need to do another Recon mission after getting a few more addresses, we really only went to "body shop" central , which is 2 streets with only body shops,

I need to find out where the locals take their cars , because I am sure its not these places !

Re: Anyone know a good Tijuana paint / body shop

That's a real shame. I was at Laredo AFB in the late 50's & we enjoyed crossing over on a weekly basis. I think I read that the police chief lasted less than 1 day before he was assassinated

Re: Anyone know a good Tijuana paint / body shop

I felt better there than many parts of LA,

OK...I would NOT go down there at night , but the middle of the day its just a bunch of people working,

We went to a few places my friend knew off the beaten path,
amazing all the old cars around , but nothing British so far /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I some some [censored] work and some real good work,

you never know if the [censored] work because the guy said he has only $200 to do a job that even there should be $400,

This is a place to think about taking "driver" cars , there might be a "show" car quality shop but we have not found it yet !

Re: Anyone know a good Tijuana paint / body shop

I read an article in "Rod and Custom" (I believe) several years ago called "In search of the Tijuana Tuck". Even though the primary goal of the trip was to check out upolstery shops, they found a number of shops that did body work and the report was that the worked looked good and the materials used were the same used un the U.S. at the time.

Can a person get in trouble in TJ? sure...but I can get in trouble anywhere. I am a bit disconcerted that so many are apparently buying into urban legend level stories about Mexico.

Re: Anyone know a good Tijuana paint / body shop

I wouldn't leave my property accross the border, regardless of "assurances". If price is the only reason one would take his car to Tijuana to get it repainted, you're likely to lose the savings in other areas of potential trouble. Maybe our attorney knows what we don't, but I crossed the border to Tijuana once in 1980, and it reminded me of the "old west" movies, unpaved dirt and dusty streets, no logic or order in traffic, I wasn't there for 20 minutes when I decided to turn around and go back to San Diego where after waiting for 2 hours in line, my car was searched, lot of questions asked, lot of I.D. checks, lot of hassle. It cannot be any BETTER today with the current state of affairs.

I lived in South Texas for a number of years. During that time I had went to various parts of Mexico numerous times. And agreed, during that ten years I encountered virtually no problems other than bieng thouroughly searched more than once by the Federalies in some night clubs {On the mexican side} I have to this day, NO idea what or whom they were looking for but they searched everyone inside of the clubs. Needless to say, although I had done nothing irrational I was slightly scared.
During the last two years of my tenure in Texas I witnessed one gun battle between what I suspect were drug cartel oponents In Nueve Laredo. YES I RAN LIKE HE77 for safety. on another occasion as I was attempting to make my way back to the U.S. boundry and {didn`t see the gun battle but Heard gunfire} Yep ran like the beegeebers again. That was my last time visiting Mexico. Border towns are notorious for drug cartel activity these days. You may be safe going there, but all it takes is one bullet to change your life forever.
I for one have seen enough of Mexico to last me the rest of my life.
If I heard of this encounter by someone else I might say "urban Legend". Believe me when I say it was no Legend.
Then again I went down there many many time with no problems and had a great time too!
