Anyone have a tape measure handy?

Hi Everyone,
I find myself sadly needing a particular dimension for my BJ8. What I’m looking for is the vertical height from the frame rail to the underside of the scuttle or maybe the bottom lip of the shroud. If the floor has carpet, I’d love to know so I can factor that in. I have a suspicion that my scuttle is too low making the rear shroud difficult to fit. It would be nice to know for sure.
Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,

My BJ7 measures 25 5/16" from the frame rail (right next to the center bead as shown) to the bottom lip of the shroud.

Cheers,
John

Greg, I do not have an exposed frame rail, my floor pan and carpet underpad? (the stuff glued to the floor pan) are in, the carpet and gearbox tunnel are currently removed.

From about where I approximate your blue line to be, and taken from on top of the pan and pad, I measure 24-5/8" to underside of "padded" dash.

Using a straightedge and coming away from the underside of the padded dash, adjacent to the right hand "air from heater" knob, and measuring down to the frame rail at the gearbox mount, I measure 25-1/4"

These measurements seem to agree with John's.

Hi Greg, is your problem the same on both sides of the shroud or just the right hand side?--Keoke

Hi Keoke,
I’m not sure at the moment. My car is at the body shop and I haven’t seen it this year (about 13 days). The issue is lining up the door-to-rear fender gaps (too much gap at the bottom) and the line of the door top to the top of the shroud as viewed from the side of the car. The shroud angles up towards the rear. If I position the fender to fix the gap, then the rear lower lip of the shroud hangs below the floor of the trunk. I suspect the scuttle (and doors) should be raised so I can raise the front of the rear shroud while keeping the rear shroud lined up with the trunk floor. I think that the frame rail to scuttle measurement should be the same on both sides since these cars were produced as both left and right hand drive?

Greg,
Have you tried lifting the car about 2"behind the front outrigger? Without the sills in the car will have a sag in it giving you the body fit problems you describe. With the engine & trans in put a aloor jack about 2" behind the front outrigger, lift it and the body should come in close alignment. Your problem sounds just like my BN7 before I replaced the sills and used this process to get the frame squared up right.

John and Dave, thank you ever so much for taking the time to crawl around in your cars for me.

Hi Steve, Thanks, that is something I will definitely look at the next time I see the car.

Ack! coffee just boiled over on the stove. I write too slow.

Good luck Greg, this doesn't sound like something you want to "kind of" figure out as you go, there's got to be someone nearby with some expertise.

Just an update. Turns out the scuttle was too low, by about ¾”. Raising and leveling it solved the issue with the rear shroud lining up. It’s kind of like climbing a hill of loose gravel, but I seem to be further along now. Thanks.

GregW,
Can you tell me what process they used to raise the scuttle. I think my BJ8 may have the same problem. Thanks for your help.

John

Hi John,
First note is the sill and outer side panel of the foot well weren’t welded in. When the outer side panel was removed previously, I think the scuttle sagged a bit. Basically, we took a bottle jack and raised the rear of the panel (closest to the hinge pillar) until we got the desired height. Then clamped everything again. Since the firewall and air ducting box had never been removed, I figured raising the rear was the answer instead of raising the outer panel straight up evenly. They we would have been fighting against the firewall.

GregW,
I am not sure what is going on with my car! Something has changed when I removed the rusted out sills and without any dimensions to go by I am flying blind. Is there a way you can send your phone number. I would like to call you and get your opinion. I checked the dimension from the frame rail to the underside of the schttle: left side is 25 7/16", right side 25 6/16". Thanks and have a good day!

Hi John,
Just checking, did you get the e-mail I sent you on Monday? Turns out I have another address for you @att. I think that was when we were talking about dashboard patterns.
