Anyone ever mount a side exhaust on a BN1 or BN2

Hey all,
Anyone ever mount a Derrington style side exhaust ( two pipes making almost 90 degree turn from muffler outlets) that exits right behind the driver's door ? Similar to what came on a 100S but of course does not mount or exit on the right side. Curious with the results, sound, etc if anyone can offer feedback.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike--

I had that setup for a while on my BN1--a single large-bore exhaust off of DW headers. It did offer the advantage of better ground clearance but was not worth the extra noise and as Rick suggests I eventually switched to having the exhaust run to the back of the car.

Michael's right, unless you want to drive around on the streets with a helmet and ear plugs, in a side exhaust will get old real fast. Here's what a 100-4 racer sounds like with a side system. https://youtu.be/gQhTDsAwe9Y

Wear earplugs!

Hey Rick,

My two sisters who live in SoCal called me tonight. They are back there and were finishing up a fried clam dinner at Woodman's.

I wish that I'd been with'em and I'd be banging on your door about now.

Planning on it for next (2012) summer, prolly after we drag the Healey to Conclave in Louisville.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the feedback ! Love the "exhaust porn" from Rick as the system I got but have not installed from AH Spares is polished stainless steel and looks almost as good. My existing muffler needed to be replaced after too many close encounters of the speed bump kind so even with shipping, cheaper from UK than buying it here. The muffler or silencer as the Brits call them, is highly polished ss and the side exhaust was not polished but now it is - looks pretty nice ! Listened to the link Doug included and actually thought that 100M, which is what this would go on - sounded pretty good - exhaust sound porn ! Since I already have the side exhaust pipes, think what I will do is install the new dual inlet with dual outlet muffler, try out the side exhaust, if simply too loud and bothersome, stick on twin exhaust pipes like six cylinder roadsters have. My 100M has an old Derrington header on it so has the dual down pipes versus the single so cannot use a standard style 100-4 muffler on it anyway. I'll let y'all know how it works out and sounds, will see if I can post a link to a youtube video like Doug did.
Many thanks,
Mike

Mike,

A couple of options. My bugeye has a built 948 with a long center branch header, 4.55:1 gears and a BL Special Tuning muffler. On the highway at 65 mph, it turns 5500 rpm and sounds like the proverbial hive of angry bees. But I love the sound. Solution, foam ear plugs like shooters wear. It makes a huge difference. The other alternative is Stebro and Pacesetter make resonator tips that you could add on to the end if it was too noisy. Loud pipes may not save lives, but they make us smile. Besides, as I get older and my hearing gets worse, it's almost like a noise cancelling device.

howdy howdy,
sure it's personal,i've run side pipes for years-love em!!!!
although having drug a pipe or two, will caution, if exhaust stream changes trajectory you can melt the tube out of your tire

Some years back I mounted a side exhaust on a 3000 street car. I used the stock muffler. It was very cool for driving around town. Then I drove it from Portland, Oregon to Park City, Utah in 1996 (or was it'97) for the big meet. It was horrible. I did not even think to bring ear plugs. Maybe that's why I have trouble with hearing these days.

Oh come on Richard, it wasn't that drive to Utah that ruined your ears. It was doing battle in # 466 over the last 25 years that did it..........

Hey all,
Went ahead and installed the side exhaust piece onto my new dual outlet muffler. Had to shorten the length of the standard piece purchased from AH Spares which was intended to be used on a 100-6 or 3000. Otherwise it would have intruded into the rear wheel well. By cutting it down by 2 inches, fits under the dogleg area and does not intrude into the wheel well. Looks pretty good as left the final two inches polished stainless and painted the rest and the polished stainless steel muffler ( hated to do it but stood out like sore thumb) flat back high temp and all does not stand out too much. So, how does it sound or is it too loud ???? Thank goodness, no, it's not too loud as I didn't want to reinstall the old single tailpipe big bore system. Sounds similar to my BN6 system but not as throaty or as loud at speed. Of course it's not a big 6, but at hard pedal, sounds good but won't scare the neighbors. I will try to get a YouTube video done and post the link here for any that are interested.
Regards,
Mike

Here's a picture of the side exhaust as mounted to my 100M. This side exhaust extension from AH Spares turns straight out as opposed to angling out like the Stebro system on this link. As I mentioned, painted the new muffler and all of the side exhaust a high temp flat black except for the last 2 inches. The sound is not too loud and I like the throatier sound versus my old big bore single pipe.Haven't figured out how to do a YouTube video yet but not sure what you could hear anyway as know I can't show the video and blip the throttle at the same time!
Regards,
Mike

here's a website as picture was too large to attach - also includes two pictures from recent car shows at British Car Days in Charleston, SC and Hilton Head Concours

My previous car for 10+ years. Fun in small spurts, but the pipes did get old on longer trips.

Now those are some side pipes !!!! I'll see if I can figure out how to post a YouTube video with the sound, just have to see who will blip the throttle for me so you can hear something. As to the award it was at the recent Hilton Head Concours. I was in Saturday's event, Car Club Jamboree and was selected for what they call a Crescent Award and invited to drive up to the Awards presentation area. Have to admit, was pretty neat to drive up there along with other winners and they announce you and your car. Was not the Sunday Concours event where the big dogs are by invitation only but was recommended by several of the judges to apply for next years Sunday Concours so might give it a try. Would not have any thoughts of winning an award as my Healey is not to the level of the Concours winners but be cool to be invited. Trust me, if I'm lucky enough to be in next year I'll have to get on the forum and let all know about it !
Regards,
Mike
