I'm betting the YouTube clip is from the Texaco Star Theater (Milton Berle).

The golden age of television. Tell me what show today would give someone 7 minutes of time for their skit?
 
Steve Martin has been touring with an old guys Blue Grass Band for a while now and is considered one of the best in the country. All he does at the shows is traditional and some originals that are in the tradition of true bluegrass music. You don't have to hear him be funny, the music stands on it's own. I've been a big fan since the days of Flat & Scrugs.
 
Pretty sure what Gene Sheldon is playing in that video is a Tenor Banjo. 4 strings, tuned to an open c (Possibly) extremely close relative to the Tenor Guitar. Same number of strings, same tuning. they were popular in the early 1900s, used in big-bands, Jazz, and Dixieland music mostly. I love that style of playing. A friend of mine, Jimmy Smith, who lives in Philly, plays Tenor Guitar. He's fabulous! You can hear some of his stuff at

Steve Martin is an excellent player. I'd love to see him perform someday. I wonder if Mr. Sheldon had some influence on a young Steve?
 
Anyone who remembers watching "The Texaco Hour", is older than dirt! :jester:. I hate to admit it, but remember it! I didn't care back then, but now I think it was pretty neat how the commercials were on the same set as the show. How about Pat Boone selling Chevy's.
