Or is it just that we're getting older?
I find them very distracting when I'm trying to
read a post.Aren't there enough distactions in
the world today already?
Keep it simple,like British cars!

Well, you could always go to your Profile settings and select the option that allows you to not see users avatars.

They do tend to eat server resources... and the end-user's machine has to be robust enuff to display the things (less a problem as more powerful machines are in use).

Moving avatars are very distracting. But, I enjoy looking at other peoples avatars and signatures. Just think, to cancel them out, I couldn't see Docs smiling face anymore!

I'd be pleased if I could get a custom avatar to work, period.

Having said that, I've found some fora where EVERYONE has an animated avatar, a huge signature with a big graphic (often animated as well), so that a simple post that says "Ha ROFLMEOW" is the size of a larger post here. That's a pain, as it often takes forever to load a long thread because everyone's post contains all these full sized pictures. (Brings me to another peeve-a railroad forum I'm a member of has photo sub-fora, and most of the guys post their photos full sized, and will make three posts with a bunch of big photos in each one, so that opening it and scrolling takes forever, even on my high speed connection. And now I've run on too long...)

An avatar (from the Sanskrit word for "a form of self", commonly used in many Indian languages) is a computer user's representation of himself/herself or alter ego, whether in the form of a three-dimensional model used in computer games, a two-dimensional icon (picture) used on Internet forums and other communities, or a text construct found on early systems such as MUDs. It is an “object” representing the embodiment of the user. The term "avatar" can also refer to the personality connected with the screen name, or handle, of an Internet user.

I would miss Doc's avatar, still think his glasses look like he has a pair of antennae. Just "buggn" him. :savewave:

I alternate the antennae and th' A.F.D.B. while I'm postin'. :smirk:

I think all 3 of us have avatars that represent us very well.....especially Doc's...I saw it on a wall in the post office the other day.

What application can I use to resize one of my pictures small enough to use it as an avatar?

I use microsoft picture manager. I open the picture I want and go to <edit picture> then I select <compress> and click on the web pages choice. It will usually shrink it down to about 40 -50 on the first try. Save it. close it...open it again and compress it again. Repeat until it's small enough to upload as an avatar.

I wonder if those Antenna receive the new HDTV single or if you carry one of them there
adapter things!!!

Had t' spend twenty Flebs on a converter! :madder:
