Anybody with trips......HELP

Took the dizzy apart. Everything is smooth as grease, all springs in place (both types). Lathered everything up with fresh lithium grease. Reinstalled. Got timing down to 6* BTDC. Ran around the block and woke the neighbors. Not the most popular guy in the neighborhood with that loud burble. Music to me, harsh to them. What do they know? I am going to bed, tomorrow. Keep the cards and letters coming.

Let us know when you've driven it beyond that "bog down" range. I still think that you should be closer to the factory spec of 10-12 BTDC at idle to get full power, but whatever makes you and the motor happy.

He may have trouble getting it to idle smoothly below 1000rpm with his GP2 cam. My GP3 cam will NOT idle smoothly below 1100rpm, and it still sounds very tough at 1100rpm. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

IIRC Richard Good suggested somewhere around 10-12 degrees with 36 total advance. He also suggests/uses vacuum advance with his GP2-3 cams to help low rpm power. My car is pure mechanical advance now but am thinking of having Jeff rebuild my dizzy and make it vacuum advance.

Shawn,

If you have a retard unit, it only comes in to play off the line, so to speak, to prevent too much advance on initial throttle application. I have mine curved with the Euro 150HP, no smog setup and with the retard it works great.

I still have the original that Jeff did for me, with the Pertronix and matching coil.

That's why I can probably get away with 14-16 BTDC for my initial setting.

Performance cams will always need a higher idle or it will lope into a stall. I still think that Bill will get a lot more juice for his money with the timing at 12 than at 6 or 8.

Paul,

I was under the impression that retard was used more for emissions, idle quality, cooling and fuel mileage (when cruising)more than for performance/increased power.

I only mentioned the idle because you suggested setting it at 900rpm and then setting the timing. He might not be able to get it to idle at 900rpm without it jumping around. I agree with the more juice at 10-12 degrees. I was pointing out that I had remembered being told by Richard Good to do just that and to shoot for about 36 degrees total advance.

Shawn, the way it was explained to me, by several knowledgeable guys (Jeff & Erik), was that the retard unit was installed to prevent too much advance at initial take off. Which was probably a way to allow for the higher timing with the degrading quality of gas in the 70's without making the cars complete dogs on acceleration.

Actually, Jeff recommended that I keep mine hooked up to allow for smoother acceleration and to prevent pinging with the more radical curve in my distributor and so far I'm very happy with the results.

I stand corrected about the idle. I forgot that he no longer had a stock cam and with a higher lift and/or longer duration, the idle quality usually goes very rough at factory settings.

I remeber these symptoms well, I also remeber that my Tr6's problem like this was caused by a leaky diaphram in the carbs. I know the other reasons could also do it, but you should check them, especially if you are using the 10% ethenol gasoline.

Regards

It probably the California air screwing up my memory. I've been in Los Angeles since Wednesday for a week long lead up to a friends wedding. (his bachelor party is why I was in Vegas a few weeks ago). As I am one of the groomsmen with multiple duties, I've been a bit pre-occupied this week and now feel WAY behind on keeping current with the posts.

I've had no time to try nd contact any BCFer's and will have to try that next time I find my self in SoCal. Just aint gonna happen this time around. Way too busy with wedding stuff. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

You have been quite conspicuous by your absence, my friend....

Shawn- Just to catch up, while you where away we've had a coup and have elected the Doc as grand Pubar and are holding the emperor hostage for free t-shirts.

Coup not going well. All tee shirts are really hidden MG logos under the BCF logo. It's been said that they change in the sun at shows while proudly displaying your Triumph. Something about Roswell or government cover-up. Not sure at this point.

Going dark for a while..........

I thought the "hidden logo" scheme was BRILLIANT! Went off without a hitch... 'til now.

nevermind... 's all "rumor 'n propaganda"! Rego's "outta th' loop". Nothing to be concerned over. Wear those BCF logos with pride!

*snicker-snort*

Now I know why the Dr. switched avatars. It's like the DaVinci code....there was a code or logo hidden in the image on the sunglass lens....right here in front of us all that time......brilliant, utterly brilliant
