Anybody Race their MG?

All this talk about more horsepower wants me to go out and fire up the Spirit of Lister.Hey guys you can stuff what ever you want into your cars. The Lister[read 64 sunbeam alpine to start] has a mild 351 windsor.270 hp and 330 pounds of torque. We can start off in 5th gear but usually go from 1st to fourth casual like. The law thinks I'm speeding when we are standing still so they want to see what this car is. The power available required an 8" ford rear end. I put the body down on the tires the first time I floored it.. This of course has been rectified.Modified the steering with a mustang rack.Steers nice over 25 mph.Am working on the front end to eliminate ackerman problems.Since we went and made this a fastback coupe to replicate the lister tigers it has enough rigidity.

The sun is shining but the top is up on the 62.

If drag racing is your thing, the advise you've recieved is correct. But what about racing in a venue where the MGA excells, vintage road racing?
You could contact SVRA and possibly, through their links find a vintage racing club in your area.
I have a 65 MGB that I run with VARAC all over Canada and the US. It's an awsome bunch of fun, not overly expensive and the comoradery is great.
Cars have to be prepared to the racing standards of the era.
And don't let anyone tell you that MG's aren't fast. That burbling motor lulls you into thinking it's slow, but have ever noticed how little time it takes to pull out and pass someone?
On the track my stock 74 B is way quicker than my wife's 86 Honda Prelude which has a dual carb 2000 cc engine and 5 speed trans. When your driving it, you feel like your really whipping around the track. But after five laps and lots of smoke coming of the punny brakes the lap times don't even compare to the B.

Bumping this thread to ask a question- Doesn't the B compp next to the Ford Focus, etc? Can an MGB be a cheap and competitive autocross car?

I've never autocrossed but to me as a Klutz and a beginner the B seems like it would be ideal as it handles well and has relatively low power so I'd look a little less stupid if I did something idiotic on track.

Just curious.

B's used to rule, along with spridgets, spits and other Brits in the SCCA production classes. They make great autocrossers
