anybody got a pit dug in the garage?

A house I used to have had one in the garage-it was done in the day prior to current regulations. It had 4 inch block walls filled with concrete and 2 x 6
lumber to cover it when not in use. I have no idea about the legality of pits today but it sure came in handy.

Checkout the GarageJournal.com there is a lengthy forum item there dealing with all aspects of Garage pits

The house I grew up in had a stairway to the basement with a door at the bottom. We used it as a "pit" all the time. Not very good in the rain, but better that being on your back!

I thought I wanted to add a pit when I built the extra stall on my garage, but I was doing all the work myself and was worried about getting it all done on time, so skipped it, having read the various comments here I am losing any regret I had in not adding the pit, we never had one, but I remember freinds and grandparents etc. houses with the stairs leading down to the basement or "root cellar" being outside. never thought of usinf that as an ready made pit, clever idea.

Pits in most areas have been banned due to the dangers of working in an area that is susceptible to explosive gas settling in it. Most insurance companies, if they know you have one will not give you fire insurance. I had one at one time and by the time I put explosive proof lights in it and a ventilation system to bring fresh air in and exhaust out the other end, I could have put in a nice lift. I don't advise anyone putting one in! As said before, they are dangerous. JMHO. PJ

I have a pit in my garage. Insurance agent didn't see it when the house was appraised due to the dpo's junk that the garage was stuffed to the gills with. When i pull back the plating to expose the pit before I use it, I turn on an exhaust fan to blow any trapped fumes out. I love that pit when it comes time to service the Impala because the car is far too low to use those ramps to get enough height to work under.
