Anybody buy a starter from them?

Looks exactly like the gear reduction starter that TRF sold to me a few years ago.

I think this was just dicussed in a post a few weeks ago. This is a Doctor selling these?

Bill- I thought I remember you having problems with a starter a while ago and I did a search but came up empty or quit to early. You where the reason I asked to see if they were it.

Roofman- Seems to be a British parts co.

Yes, that's being sold by Dr. Marty. I've bought stuff from him. He live here on Long Island, so I just go and pick the stuff up. Seems like a real straight up guy that like LBC's.

BTW, he is a real doctor. He started selling this stuff when he was going to med school to help with finances...has been doing it ever since. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

Thanks Art. I now remember your post from the last discussion. Have you bought a starter from him?

I had one on a previos car and all was good from Dr. Marty.

All of these gear reduction starters that are being sold by whomever are basically all the same. They start off with a tried and true Nippondenso core, and then just have adaptor plates machined to fit all of the various applications. There are a slew of different gears available, so something can be found to match any situation.

The big advantage to these starters are they have higher torque at a higher rpm, so they spin the engine much faster while using considerably less current. They also weigh less, and can be repaired (if that is ever necessary) by any local rebuilder. Now that I think about it, there are NO disadvantages. Well, there is that pesky concours judge.

Yup, got one and very happy with it. Doc's a good guy too.

There is a difference in how some of them will (or will not) fit in a given application. My problem was fitting a gear reduction starter on my TR6 with a Falcon split (2 piece) header. The standard sold by Moss won't fit. Period. The one sold by TRF would (but they were out at the time). Finally Ted Schumacher at TSI Automotive fit, with an adapter which he kindly supplied. If I were you, I would call Ted and tell him exactly what you have and he can fix you up.
Ted maintains that he is the supplier to Moss.
Ted's price is also extremely competitive. I don't think you will find one any cheaper, anywhere....

I bought two from him, one for the TR4 and one for the E-type. Both are working great and I'm happy with them.

I'm running 6 to 3 to 2 Bill do you think I will have problems, this is why I posted.

Yes, you will. My header is a 2-piece Falcon stainless header that makes up into true duals. You will either need an older style gear reduction starter that fits the TR250 opening and uses a cast aluminum adapter plate. The one I got from Ted was clockable in 20* increments. I was able to fit it in only one of the many available positions. Ted provided the adapter. The starter from TRF is a different model that is clockable but you will have to jamb one of the two retaining bolts under the adjustable face, which makes for a tricky install. I went through Heck with Moss (3 starters) before they agreed with me that theirs would not work. They were not particularly nice about it, sorry to say. Ted is gruff and to the point, no b.s., but he knows his stuff.

I'm just curious about these high torque starters. If your car starts immediately with the regular original starter, is there any really good reason to buy a high torque starter. If my original starter starts to act up or breaks, I would change over, but until then, is there any reason to switch out a good starter???.

I just purchased a starter from doc and it went on very easy, the only thing I dont like is it seems like it doesnt spin the engine as fast as the original starter, so I think I am going to get the original starter rebuilt. If I decide in the near future I might put the original back on the car. I might ebay the new gear reduction one. How ever the new one works fine
