Any suggestions for draining a full gas tank....

Re: Any suggestions for draining a full gas tank..

I guess the problem with that is I can raise the car just so high on my jack stands and the gas cans I have are Jerry Cans, barely fit under the car. A can sitting aside the car would be better for me. Too, disconnecting a gas line under the car to let it drain can be a little tricky, with no great control over the flow of gas and no quick ability to shut it down if you must. Ask me how I know this. Raw gas all over my little one-car garage is not a pretty sight.

Bill,

Get a pair of vice grips and one of those big plastic oil draining containers from autozone (the kind with the spout to empty it). Raise the car, clamp the line, disconnect it and position it to drain (or add an extension), then let-her-rip. If the container gets full, re-clamp, empty the gas into a jerry can and repeat until done.

Bill - you should be able to get one of these (attach) at Eastwood, Napa, or a local hardware store. I have seen them as low as $6-7.

I have used this to drain my Spitfire tank. It will handle gas ok. I would suggest you wrap a little tape around the ends of the hoses where they insert into the pump. This is just a friction-fit, and I found initially that some small amount of gas bled down the hose. Not a lot, but enough to be a pain in the butt. A little tighter fit on the hoses fixed the problem.

I also found I needed to keep the hose inserted in the fuel tank straight (i.e. stop it from curling around), so I bent a piece of wire coathanger straight and just taped it to the outside of the hose and inserted it in the tank just fine.

If you drain into a jerry-can sitting below the level of the fuel tank, you'll find that once the siphon-pump is primed and going, it will gravity-feed from the tank to the can.

Watch out for static electricity this time of year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

I still recommend just running the gas out. 3rd gear and about 3500 rpm will sound about right.
