"On May 11, 2008, Rutsey died in his sleep of an apparent heart attack, possibly related to complications from diabetes. John's family wish to keep the funeral a private affair although an obituary posted in the Toronto Star on May 15 suggested those wishing to pay tribute to Rutsey could do so by making a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Ontario"

I've been listening to Rush for the past 30 years. Without him as a founding member, we would not have the great music the we have today.

Sad thing. An influential band for me in my early days of playing.

Guess its just a generational thing? Dunno.....I never heard of them....were they regional?

They came thru here six or eight months ago, met up with an old friend at that venue. The man who taught me the craft of photography as a kid. He's the Rush fan. Now in his 80's! He likely heard this sad bit of news.

Not regional, Tony, but never truly huge i.e. not at the Rolling Stones level, but definitely a-list during their peak years. Progressive rock, 70s - 80s were their big years. High level of musicianship.

Ah, 70's-80's I was mostly out of the country, or at least "in-&-out"...didn't follow the music scene during that time.

I'm a generation or two back from you Tony, but it's all news to me too

I've listened to Rush ever since I was 10 years old (1980). I started playing drums when I was 8 and "2112" absolutely blew me away. It was one of the first albums that I actually listened to musically since there was no way that I could comprehend what Neil was doing behind the drum set. The next album that I got was "Moving Pictures," which I still listen to quite often. One of the major milestones in my life was when I was 16 and the band that I was in was able to play YYZ all the way through, I'm sure the mullet helped...

I saw them two or three years ago with a high school friend and one of the songs they played was "The Temples of Syrinx." Poor Geddy had to sing it an octave lower. Still a VERY tight band and a tremendous show.

They are a great band, and the loss of John is very sad. I had the chance to see them last year when they were touring the new album. I have been listening to them since the late 70's. They were the first concert I ever saw, and none were better in concert than Rush.

Godspeed John.

Very Sad

Nial a Rush fan, I knew I liked you for The Who, but now you have moved up another notch.

Next we will here that Jack likes the Chili Peppers

Very Sad

Thanks for that video Nial. I've seen them probably 9 times and am going again in July. One of the first concerts I ever saw and totatlly re-molded my approach to music. I too am a drummer and still am amazed at what NP can do. John was no Neil but it is still sad to hear the one of the founding members has passed.

Rush was a little after my "prime" music time too (I'm from the Beatles, Led Zep, Stones, Hendrix, etc period). However, I do have some of their stuff and always enjoyed them. My next door neighbor back in the 80's was a Rush fanatic and I'd always hear them whenever I went to his house. They definitely had a unique style and I always thought that, like many other bands of that era, they didn't get the mainstream recognition they deserved.

They actually sang ABOUT something, not a bunch of drivil like sooooooo many "other" bands did.

I'm 50 y.o. Did I really just say that? Was never a big fan,UNTIL,last year on PBS I watched a recent show they did in Europe. I was blown away. How do 3 people get that full of sound. Been a big fan ever since.
Which one was he?

Sad day indeed. The show wasn't the rush R30 show in germany?

HDnet played that one and it was pretty amazing for 3 guys. Made sure to save it on my dvr recorder. They are one of the few groups that I think sound better live than recorded. They are on my list of bands that I will see if they get close enough to me.

He was the drummer on the first album. He quit just before they started touring and Neil Peart has been with them ever since.

I like the fact that they sound album perfect while playing live. Having studied them since I was little I can tell when they venture off a little but it is rare that they do that.

Dang, I must be more progressive for a 60 year old than I thought! Been a Rush fan since their early days (it helps I'm sure, that I have a brother 7 years younger who was influential in exposing me to stuff I may have missed otherwise!) It makes one feel REALLY old when hearing of deaths such as this!! For the other "old fogies" who were not familiar with them, they are definitly worth a listen (unlike the "other" Rush)!!

I lived in Detroit area in the early 70's and saw Rush and Kiss at the same concert around 73 or so at a place called the Michigan palace ( no longer there). I think it was one of those radio station promotions with 96 cent tickets. I went to see Kiss but left a Rush fan.
