They used to call this act "The Drunken Flying Farmer". To be more pc, they changed the name to "The Flying Farmer."

Hmmmm, not so complementary to farmers, eh?

Someone doing this act accidently flew through power lines, but somehow kept flying and made it back to the runway with wings all bent up and torn fabric streaming behind. The spectators thought it was all part of the act!

What are those wing tips made of, Titanium? How do they not snap off from catching on a seam on the tarmac?

I've seen Roger Lenhert do this at the old Sussex Airshow (here in NJ) in a J3 Cub.

In some ways, it's sort of stupid, but he's clearly a skilled pilot.

Well, instead of stupid, I would say corny, but it's all in good fun. The kids like it.

And it does demonstrate how forgiving a Cub can be. One thing they do, I was told, is back the control surface stops all the way out to allow max deflection!

A J-3 Cub is about the best aircraft around to do a falling leaf. Looks and sounds simple, but you have to out think the aircraft and make corrections before it actually does what you asked it to do. Sounds crazy, but takes a lot of skill. The plane actually looks like a leaf falling from the sky, sashaying back and forth with little to no forward motion. Lotta fun. With a little breeze up there, you can actually back a 65hp J-3 up. Looks crazy from the ground. PJ

If this is your idea of fun...

Count me out. I'll stay on ol' terra firma.

Da less da firma....... da more da terra :eeek:

I think I'd have to wear adult diapers to be in a plane while someone is doing a falling leaf... sounds like it would scare the bejeebus out of people if they're not expecting it :eeek:
