anti-seize recommendations for Radiator Drain Tap

Any recommendations for the type of anti-seize or other lubricant for drain taps? I know grease is not a good thing.

The radiator came off easy. No one said it would take three times as long to get the water pump off the block.

----- heck if we told ya about all the "pit falls" ya might sell the car and wed have no one to type at! did you get the drain tap out in one piece? ive known guys that used teflon tape and others that have used generic types of anti-seize some guys use nothin at all, some use a sealer but ive never had to do that, i use "milk of magnesia" works every time this compound is also very good on anything that gets hot i.e exhaust fittings etc, there really isnt a special one to use if anyone tells you so its only cuz its their fav, or have had success with it the past., such as myself,--- "three times as long to get the water pump out"- hay welcome to the forum. --- keoke, enter stage left... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Re: anti-seize recommendations for Radiator Drain

Thanks for the welcome. I'm new to the forum but have owned a Healey for 25 years. Unfortunately, I forgot some of the tricks but I remembered not to force the tap lever. I unscrewed the tap from the radiator no problem.

There was a special compound I used to put inside these taps to keep them from seizing. Can't recall what it was. Pastey sort of stuff made just for valves in water. The heater tap with the gunk still turns but I never had the radiator tap off.

What do you put inside these valves?

Re: anti-seize recommendations for Radiator Drain

Keoke, I can see using Coppaslip for the tap threads, but do I really want to use Coppaslip as lubricant inside the valve? Seems like it would be gooey. Plus, how does the copper react with the antifreeze and will it dissolve water? There is a lubricant for ball valves and I'm going to find it!

Good group of people here - kind of like BJ8 brake drums - slightly off balance but functional.

It will be great to get the Healey back on the road.

That's my nomination for quote of the week!

You've had your Healey almost as long as I've had mine; twenty-nine (29) years this past April.

There is a lubricant for ball valves. I just rebuilt my kitchen sink ball type (the single handle type) valve and used this lubricant. It's available in small quantities at Home Depot.

Re: anti-seize recommendations for Radiator Drain

I contacted the manufacturer of Coppaslip. They don't recommend it ball valves on the radiator. They said: "We suggest you use a dry-film, which will not be affected by water or temperature. Molyslip ADF is our air-drying film of MoS2 (dry-lubricant 400ml aerosol at GBP11.20, +3.50 P&P,+2.57 VAT =GBP17.27)". I can't find the stuff here in the states. Coppaslip is likely okay anyway based on Keoke's experience but Keoke really should stop using it on the beer keg tap. My old time radiator shop says just use white lithium grease which is water insoluble.

Johnny, you found it. Thanks.

Re: anti-seize recommendations for Radiator Drain

Hey Andy!, next time you talk to those coppa slip folks ask them how Copper is affected by treated radiator water or temperature. Oh! I guess I better send them an application tip--Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
