Another what cooling fan is this question?

JJS,

Very nice work.

With the baffles in place and your aggressive engine fan and fan shroud, I expect your electric fan will provide little added benefit, even during a Florida summer. Consider replacing your aggressive and noisy Texas Cooler type engine fan with the original, much quieter and less aggressive, metal fan and allow the electric fan to take up any cooling slack. You will also reduce engine drag.

All the best,
Ray (64BJ8P1))

Amen -- very nice work indeed!

Ray - I'm surprised - isn't the BMW fan with its 5 unevenly-spaced blades going to be pretty quiet? My 6-bladed SS fan certainly makes a racket.

How is using the stock heavy-metal fan going to decrease engine drag? I assume you're advocating the 6-bladed 'tropical' fan.

jjs,
Very elegant installation.
You will be rewarded for you efforts with lower operating temps. And a cooler cockpit.
That BMW fan should be quiet. The Spal fan makes some noise. Can't hear it from the cockpit though.

Steve,

I stand corrected as I did not recognize the BMW's difference from the Texas Cooler which, IMO, is not quiet.

The original 4-blade metal fan with mildly angled blades is much quieter then the Texas Cooler and should be sufficient, given the other modifications and electric pusher fan. The original 4-blade fan should create less drag on the engine and contribute to a original look.

Steve,

I agree but it would look inconsistent. That is why I suggested the mild original 4-blade fan as a replacement for the BMW.

The BMW fan does not seem that noisy, at least idling or revving in driveway. I am still a few weeks away from a true road test. What does make the noise is when the electric fan kicks on. But again, once the hood (bonnet) is closed, it may not be so bad for what we hope is a small amount of actual drving time the electric fan is on.

I have a friend who lives in Phoenix that has a 57 Morgan with a TR3 motor. His setup does not have an engine fan, jut an electric that I assume must run most of the time. Also he said one of the biggest improvements he made for cooling was the addition of the radiator expansion tank that is currently being discussed in another thread.

We will let the world know if our improvements actually work, soon we hope.

I used to have a TR4A that needed the expansion tank to keep from overheating. I figured out on that car that the high point of the system was not the radiator cap, but the thermostat housing. Thus, the system kept emptying.
