I know theres been quite a few TR6 tire diescussions here but I searched and didn't really find what I was looking for. My TR6 needs tires, because I can't stand looking at the ones that are on it now, profile is much too low for the car at stock height and in my opinion makes it look all wrong. I don't need anything fancy, this is just a beater, but I want them to be the proper size(height in particular). So my question is what are my size options that will be close to standard height.

Current tires(notice how low the profile is and how much open wheel well is left to be filled).

I went with a 205/75/15 Michelin X series. Like you I wanted to stay with a more original look. The total diameter is 26.8" per the Michelin web site.
 
Sorry, should have included that right now I have Michelin X series 195/60/15's. There're in really good shape with a few cracks because I let them go flat over the winter but they're just way to small height wise.
 
Any tire you get ,you don't really want to get a taller tire, won't be that much taller unless you get a ridiculous size. To fill that gap you need to lower the body to the tire.
 
I have been considering the Yokohama 205/70/15 AVID TRZ.
They have a very good rating on Tire rack, but the reviews are up and down.

205/70R15 is very close to the height of the stock tire, but wider. 185R15 is the stock size; I think the aspect ratio is about 78. I got the Vredestein Sprint Steel 185R15 from Tires unlimited a while back, but I see the price is now almost twice what I spent. There are some pics on this site of my car , I think you can search by username. 'Sienna brown TR6' I think is the title. The side shot shows them.

By the way, R6MGS, is or was your driver's door checkstrap bad - looks like a rub mark on the door from the door opening against the back edge of the front fender.

Thanks for the advice....I've been calling around trying to find a cheap but ok looking set of tires, hopefully in 205/70/R15. I won't need them until it's warm enough to move the car, but I'd like to be ready and know what I am going to get when I do get around to replacing them.

I am not sure about the checkstrap, I think it might be bad(I haven't touched the car since december so my memory of that kinda stuff is fading)There is a rub mark on the door from being opened too much at some point, but I going to be repainting the car this spring anyway.

Stock 1974 tire
185/80-15 (some people say the tire was a 185/78-15) has about a 26.65inch diameter.



If go to Tire Rack you can find dimensions of tires.

I am using Pirelli P4000 215/70/15 tires.
On my rims (Superlite alloys) that are 5.5" wide.
My overall rolling diameter is 26.8inchs.
These DO NOT RUB and I do have Good parts springs that lower the car about one inch.
I would say these tires do a great job of filling up the wheel well. Others have tried them, and have suggested
that they do not handle well.
I would say in the wet I would be very careful.
But I do not drive in the rain (In California it does not rain much, so I do not lose many driving days).
I like the ride and looks with these tires.
I have seen these tires on Porsches and Jags.

These tires really look tall and wide on my car. But the old RED LINES looked really tall and skinny.Before and after:

I really like the look of a full wheel well and a lowered car. I am happy with the way my car handles and rides and stops.
 
Here's mine with 205/70/15 Goodyear Assurance radials that I put on last fall. Probably not the best angle for what you want to see. Stock TRF springs all around. Great ride and handling and I like a little bit of space above the tire. Some don't, so all a matter of personal choice.

My sig pic below shows the skins I've got on mine now. These are 195/70 Cooper lifeliner classics and although I don't hate them I'm not crazy about them either. When I bought my car it had two brand new ones on the front, and I didn't want to waste them and get 4 different new tires, so I just bought two more of the same for the rear. I wish they were 205's, the 195's just don't fill the wheel well to my taste, but they don't look horrible IMO. My springs are stock height by the way. Maybe if I was running 1 inch drop springs I would like the look better. The tires themselves are fine, decent ride quality and traction has been good even in the wet, although I haven't really put that to the test much since the car rarely sees rain. If I had to buy something new I'd go with Yokohama's probably. I've run them on many of my other cars over the last several years and for the price (cheap) I think they perform very well, nearly equal to tires costing much more.
 
I'll have to buy tires for our TR6 (74-1/2),
but can't afford much on top of everything else.
I'm trying to find a decent tire for a good price.
I like the looks of the Redlines (Red stripe).

I ran a set of Pirelli P4000 tires all of 8000 miles. Great looking, great dry traction....zero wet traction, horrible wear. I have since gone to the Michelin Hydroedge 205/70 R15 and have, for me, the ultimate tire. Aggressive dry traction, square shoulder that really fills wheel well (yes, I am lowered), great wet traction (in Louisiana, you need that) and actually cheaper (tirerack ) than the Pirelli. Didn't used to be that way.

I'm using 215/75/15 BFG Radial T/A (at least I think that's the size I'll check when I get home) They fill out the wheel well very well, and look great. No rubbing either. I drive in the rain a lot, and traction is ok, but not great.

I'll post a pic when I get home tonight.

BTW what hard top is that?
 
Bill, I almost bought the HydroEdge. Very nice tire, both in looks and performance.
