Another tiring night

After a long day of running everywhere between Altoona and Home yesterday with my girlfriend and her 2 year old niece, I was ready to just relax for the night and watch a movie. Alicia (the gf) had to go to work in Creekside about 15 min from my house at 11pm so I figured I'd watch "Leathal Weapon" after she left at about 10:40. Not 5 min later I have a phone call from her that was almost impossible to understand because she was crying so hard. The only parts I could understand were "slid off", "stuck", and "tracks"... A quick guess of which road she had taken to work led to me running to my garage and grabbing my tow chain and leaving home fast. Found her on Chambersville Road... She had slid on some loose grit and had ended up 35 feet off the road stuck on the railroad track. My 15' chain was not going to work and I was pretty certain that even if it did, my Impala would not have the grip or power to move her borrowed Taurus. Woke up my mechanic and asked his assistance and started checking the car for damage. ...I hear the train... Called 911 to try to get the train stopped. Got the train stopped about 2 miles away (right next to my house in fact). Easy job getting the car out with a truck and a bigger chain with no damage to the car. Made a call to 911 dispatch to inform them that we were clear of the crossing when a railroad maintainer showed up to check for damage blocking my car in. All's well but it would have been nice if it wasn't raining or dark or a train wasn't involved and I didn't have to work today... ...sigh...

That's good thinking! Never would have occurred to me.

Well now Alicia needs to keep you around. That was a good judgment call, calling to stop the train. Not sure if I would have thought of that in what I would call a near panic situation. Good on you.! Tell Alicia needs to reward you - dinner, perhaps?

You're a good man.

Well bowled!!

Scant few have any idea how wicked that part of the country is.

I have a similar story, a Ford Fairlane and a back-country road in the south of Allegheny County... at midnight, Herself, a work related return trip. Slipping off the two-lane blacktop.

Glad it wasn't ugly.

Now you have to explain to her how that situation could have been avoided had she been in a Spitfire.

Glad you were on your game. I got panicky just reading it....
BTW, the "Perfect Country Song" made famous by David Allen Coe was written by Steve Goodman.

She saw th' light when she got an MGB.

Wow, I too never would have thought to call 911 to get a train stopped, or at least it had never occurred to me before, and don't know that it would pop into my head in an emergency situation, would have gone into full panic mode about getting the car off the track though. Good thinking!

time for a crash course in rally driving

LoL, Doug. Actually got her to ride in it last week when it was almost decent out. She grudgingly admitted that it was a fun ride. As to avoiding that with the Spit, my solution for everything is more power! She won't take that road anymore, now opts for a longer route that crosses the track twice, once at grade and once on a bridge. Adds 5 miles or so to her drive though. Pulled her car over my pit to look at it yesterday. No damage as she seems to have landed it squarely on the sub frame. She was definitely not amused with me yesterday. Had to take a trip to Punxy and I took this picture yesterday: She is slowly getting to the point where she can laugh about it but I guess this was too soon.downsize (2).jpg

Yep. Probably too soon.:encouragement:
