Another tire question; bias or radial?

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif,now U on the road to success, I run a set of them too but the sprint classics in the 185 size. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif--Keoke
No John, they are not soft /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif--Keoke

I'm looking for tires for my TR4A for which I just bought Dayton 4.5 x 15 wire wheels.

I've done some research on these Kumho 758. Everyone I've talked with says they give a very comfortable ride, due it seems from this post to their soft rubber compound.

Given that Michelin's from Coker are $100+, how do these Michelins and the Vredestein Sprints differ in performance, ride, safety and wear??

Two last questions. Looking at these new wheels, I had to wonder, should one install a protective band around the wheels, prior to installing the tubes and mounting/balancing tires?

Lastly, does anyone know of a good link that discusses how to mount these tires to wire wheels?

Thanks,

Ted

Ok you didn`t think I wouldn`t add my 2 cents worth did you. I have the 165/15 Verdestein`s on new stainless 60 spoke wheels from Hendrix wire wheel and I love them but as soon as I got them I bled all of the air out and refilled them with nitrogen, I to have heard that moisture from the compressed air causes the tires to rot from the inside.

Hello TH, Air is ---98% nitrogen---FWIW---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Closer to 79 %

Interseting. Does nitrogen compress the same as air? Do you still fill to the same amount as "air" pressure?

Pressure is pressure. 32 psi of air pressure is 32 psi of whatever gas you might use.

Yeah Bruce, you are right, we have to leave some room for oxygen HUH---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well Skip, Big problem as I see it is ; you soon will not be able to roll into the gas station and ask for a token to get air.All the tokens are going to come out of your pocket for nitrogen- it took them a while to figure this one out.---Keoke

you are right Keoke but as long as I have 1,500 lbs of the stuff here in a cylinder in my shop doing nothing I might as well use it, if it`s good enough for Nascar there must be something to it. Skip

Ted, I mounted my own tires on the wire wheel. I purchased a couple of tire irons and by lubricating the tire wheel with a soapy water I was able to install them mostly by hand. I also used a length of garden hose cut to fit around the wheel (slit longwise) to protect the wheel, and used the irons to to slide the final few inches on the wheel. Before mounting the tire I purchased wheel tape (thicker and wider than electrical tape) and wrapped the inner portion of the wheel covering the spoke heads. I've never had a problem and I used inner tubes.
Good Luck

Good conversation on this. I mounted my Kumhos on the minilites so there wasn't too much problem with that, however they still have the 'nonstandard' spline centers so balancing is problematic. My question is: does anyone know of a qualified tire shop here in the San Antonio, TX area.......??? Thanks!
