Another throttle linkage question

I have completely removed the linkage from the car and discovered that the hole in the rod for the roll pin is off-center and oblong. Also the throttle shaft has a couple of bends in it. Is this normal, or should it be straight? I am planning on straighten out the rod, welding the holes closed, and redrilling new holes. I believe this is where 80% of the slop is coming from.

Alan, I like your idea of using small socket headed screws instead of the roll pins.

Hi Alex,

Those elongated holes are probably the source of most of the slop in your car's linkage. The white nylon bushings at the sides are another frequent problem area.

I assume you are asking about the rods that go across from bulkhead to bulkhead, behind the engine. If so, yes, those should be straight. The other rod from the lever forward to the carbs can have some bends in it, although it's usually pretty straight.

I might suggest instead of welding to just turn those rods 90 degrees and drill new holes. My concern with welding is that it could cause problems fitting the sleeves over the rod. Depending on the type of welding, it could also make the rod brittle. Turning the rod 90 degrees and drilling new holes, the old holes will be covered and hidden, anyway. Just a thought.

I've been working on rebuilding and simplifying the linkage to the Webers on my car. The lever/crank at the front is the original stock TR item and has a lot of slop in it. I found bronze bushings at a local hardware store yesterday and am trying one to see if I can eliminate the slop.

Hi Alan,

I removed and cleaned up the brackets and bushings, straightened out the throttle rod, drilled a new hole 90* from the original, and installed a new roll pin. After I put it all back together, WOW! Zero slop. The accelerator pedel height is great and the throttle response fantastic. It was a little fiddlely, but well worth the effort. Thanks for your help.
