another SU fuel pump question

This may have been covered in a prior thread, anyway...

I installed a standard SU fuel pump several years ago and given how little I drive my Healey, I still regard it as fairly new. However, I recently needed to give it a love tap to get it clicking (tapped the panel behind the driver's seat). Sticking points I assume.

My question is this: does this mean it is time to replace it? Can it be fixed easily (clean or replace the points)? Is it worth fixing?

Thanks

Norman Nock's tech tips has a full article on this also printed in October 2002 Healey Marque Magazine. It starts with removing the 6 screws holding the round body to the base. That exposes the points. If points show wear they should be replaced with genuine parts.

Is above or below correct, it all fits either way? I have had it installed both ways now, and while the car isn't driveable yet, surely would like to get it right!

Sure the points can be cleaned up or replaced with new. However I might suggest that you upgrade to a new Electronic pump and repair the old one for a spare.--Fwiw--Keoke

If I rebuild my original SU pump (+ ground) as a backup for my new electronic one, can it be converted to negative ground easily?

I see the SU electronic pump available on the Moss site, pricey but probably worth it. Do the mounting holes line up same as a conventional unit?

YES the old mechanical and the correct electronic pump are directly interchangeable.
Let me note if the electronic one comes with "O" rings use the fiber washers on top of them OK

Yes you can replace the old electrolytic capacitor, if it is that original model pump, with an equivalent sized ceramic capacitor which is not polarity sensitive.

If the original pump you have utilizes the suppression Diode [ a little round black thing with red and black leads ] just reverse the leads OK .

IF you want to purchase a diode to use this one is ok: The Diode For the SU Fuel Pump is:1N540X the Band is the Plate { Pos Side}--Keoke/Dave Russell
